Goshen’s misfires on the Flat this year have raised concerns about his current form, which makes the case for Epatante dominating the two-mile hurdle scene for the second season in a row all the clearer. Kempton and Cheltenham looks the likely route again.
Talk of Santini taking in the Betfair Chase as his first port of call perhaps suggests a more intense campaign this time around for a stayer who thrives on his racing, and his near-miss at Cheltenham highlights he’s already firmly in the Gold Cup conversation once more.
Ribble Valley’s only appearance down South didn’t end well, but he’s looked a fine prospect otherwise, including in his recent reappearance rout. There will be plenty of openings for him to confirm his potential, especially as his trainer is no stranger to trips to Ireland if the right opening presents itself. The Fighting Fifth looks an ideal starting point.
Greaneteen started his campaign in perfect fashion in the Haldon Gold Cup and, with the gap to the very best two-mile chasers far from vast, he can continue his rise through the ranks, with his no-nonsense trainer quick to highlight the Tingle Creek as his first test against some of the big boys.
Back-to-back successes in the Pertemps for Sire du Berlais shouldn’t prompt an unfair dismissal of him as merely a good handicapper – his second success was a high-class performance from a lofty mark, and the Stayers’ Hurdle division looks wide open after Paisley Park’s crown slipped in March.
Presenting Percy did plenty for his former yard, yet his move to Gordon Elliott still warrants a positive note and, judged on his enthusiastic effort in the Down Royal Champion Chase on his recent stable debut, he may well be ready to make the breakthrough at the top level that has been expected since his RSA demolition job. He’ll have all the major staying chases in Ireland on his agenda before returning to Britain for Cheltenham and even Aintree.
Much has been made of the increased programme for mares and, with that in mind, fortunate Triumph Hurdle heroine Burning Victory may not need all the luck on her side to do well this season for a trainer with few peers generally, but, especially so with fillies and mares. Cheltenham was still a vast improvement on her hurdling debut winning form, suggesting there’s going to be more still in the pipeline as she learns.
No prizes for originality, given he’s likely to feature in nearly every list across the land, but how can it make sense to ignore the most promising young horse in training? Well, it doesn’t. Step forward Envoi Allen, who needs little introduction now but may well need none by the end of another season that looks set to see his dominance continue.
Benie des Dieux may well have had her chasing career put on permanent hold rising ten, but the addition of a mares' chase at the Cheltenham Festival must surely be a tempting route for his top connections. And, even if hurdling remains on the agenda instead, it will take an exceptional one to lower her colours in races confined to her own sex this term – there’s a case for saying she was unlucky not to end last season unbeaten once again.
Few horses in training impress with their physique as much as Precious Cargo, and he’s worthy of a flyer recommendation in the belief he can fulfil his potential this season – his Cheltenham run should have taught him plenty, and he’ll have all big mid-range handicap chases in his sights. He jumped satisfactorily once warmed up when chasing home Master TommyTucker at Huntingdon on Tuesday and can only come on for that run.
