Five selections for today. All of them look set to go well on what is a low key day bar the return of Toast Of New York at
Lingfield. He is a class act and should win but off such a long lay-off he is no bargain at 5-4.
This filly showed a lot more on her nursery debut last time out.
Despite a wide and slightly troubled trip she finished second to Diamond Pursuit. She meets that rival ion 6lb better terms and by way of an added bonus Rossa Ryan gets on board claiming an extra 7lb. He is very good value for that claim.
Fire Orchid is also drawn better than his recent conqueror in that he comes from stall 1 as opposed to his rival in stall 5. Off the same mark this looks to be a gilt edged opportunity for this filly and at 5-2 she needs backing.
This horse, trained by Philip Hobbs, looks set to at least emulate if not better his decent hurdles form over fences.
After an inauspicious start over fences he got his act together last time out at Worcester where he jumped well in the main and stayed on strongly to win that Class three chase going away by a length.
He has a penalty for that in this Class 2 Novice Chase, but his experience will be invaluable against rivals who have either jumped poorly or plain disappointed over fences so far.
An added bonus is that Richard Johnson takes the mount and I can see him successfully employing front running tactics. At around 5-2 he is decent value.
I don’t know if this horse can jump but any rudimentary form analysis will tell you that he can run faster than his rivals so he is worth being with on his hurdling debut.
The fact that Neil Mulholland trains him and Noel Fehily rides adds weight to the argument for him in this discipline.
He was capable of running well off marks in the low 90’s on the Flat, which makes him an exciting recruit to this discipline. A clear round should see him in the winner’s enclosure and as such 13-8 is a good price.
This strong travelling chaser was unable to find his form for Rebecca Curtis last season but under the care of Dr Richard Newland has really hit his straps this season.
All three runs for the yard have been excellent - winning twice, once over hurdles and latterly over fences at Sedgefield.
That win came over 3m 5f and before watching the video of that win I was slightly concerned about him dropping in trip here. However, he has a high cruising speed and should not be inconvenienced.
Brian Hughes, who could have ridden at Haydock, goes to
Ludlow to ride and the hint should be taken. Anything around 5-2 is very fair.
I liked the way this horse finished his race at Aintree last time. He came home strongly after being outpaced and although he was passing beaten horses late on I believe he has more potential to fulfil over hurdles.
The first and second in that Aintree race ran really well in the Class 2 French Furze Novices Hurdle at Newcastle over the weekend and the fourth went on to win next time out.
Clearly, that is solid form and Spiders Bite shapes better than the bare result. He is ridden by Richard Johnson who rode him last time and won a bumper in him last year. He is a fair bet at 11-4.
