Betting expert Dave Nevison likes a trio in action at Exeter, Sandown and Newcastle.
2.33 Exeter: Three Zambesi’s
I have a feeling there will be a day for Three Zambesi, and that when it comes it will be off bottom weight in a modest staying handicap such as this one.
Christian Williams’ novice has been well beaten in all his starts and, bar one, has gone off at huge prices. However, he is clearly felt to have ability as he was backed down to 5-4 favourite on his final start least season before finishing a well beaten third.
He would certainly not be the first of Williams horses to work is way up the handicap starting off at a lowly level - most of his big names have done so - so this is not a total stab in the dark. In a race where it is difficult to split the front of the market, I am happy to chance that Zambesi Spirit may come on a good deal for his reappearance and that this might be the day he turns the corner.
2.55 Sandown: Hidden History
Harry Skelton rode this young stayer to perfection when he won on his chasing debut at Aintree recently, coming with a perfectly timed challenge to win by just half a length, with Champagne Twist beaten a couple of lengths into third.
The latter is 2lbs better off, so it should be close between them, but I got the impression that Skelton knew he had that race won all along.
I fancy Hidden History has plenty of upside in him and that he could be a top-class handicapper at the very least.
4.45 Newcastle: Mr Mistoffeles
San England is high on my list of trainers to be with and she has Mr Mistoffeles in top form.
His recent win at this track came over a mile but I don’t believe the drop down to 7f will be a hindrance. In fact, this strong travelling type may well be well suited by it.
This race looks set to be very strongly run, which will suit the gelding as he will likely start slowly and look for cover early on. The outside draw may well be a further plus.
