The Moet & Chandon July Festival - Darley July Cup Day - Newmarket Races

By Rachel Candelora

I’m looking forward to an evening’s punting on “the dark side” with the all-weather meeting at Chelmsford and the good American racing being my focus for today.

7:15 Chelmsford: Boynton

The Group 2 Superlative Stakes winner of last year (pictured above) will be making a belated seasonal debut as a three-year-old. He has been off since a placed effort in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes, where he was beaten by War Decree and Thunder Snow.

Charlie Appleby can get horses ready to roll of long lay-offs and the step up in trip and switch to the all-weather surface will suit given his pedigree.

Boynton was also given a reappearance option in the Group 3 Darley Club Stakes on Saturday but this seems a much easier task. Also, William Buick can ride him here whereas on Saturday he will be in action at Keeneland.

8:15 Chelmsford: Kohinoor Diamond

A maximum field of 16 go to post for this low level handicap and the top weight Kohinoor Diamond is the pick based on her winning handicap debut over course and distance last week.

This daughter of Excelebration was stepping up in trip by a half a mile on that occasion, when well backed, and now Sir Mark Prescott has turned her out quickly under the penalty but has dropped her in grade – her win was in a 0-60 handicap, this is a 0-55.

Luke Morris keeps the mount.

8:18 Keeneland: Royal Holiday

This son of Blame was originally tabbed by the Ramsey family to be their Royal Ascot runner this year, but unfortunately a setback curtailed those plans and forced a much belated two-year-old debut for him at Kentucky Downs last month.

In that race over 6f he finished second behind a horse who has subsequently been runner up in the Bourbon Stakes last weekend. The step up to a mile will suit and his connections will be disappointed if he cannot open his account here.

9:57 Keeneland: Cowboy Rhythm

This grey son of Tapit, ridden by leading Kentucky-based jockey Corey Lanerie, looks to have found an excellent opportunity by trainer Kellyn Gorder.

In a race in which many of his rivals have stamina doubts he has won three times, and finished runner up twice, in five starts over this distance and he has won and been second in both of his outings here at Keeneland.

He has a versatile run style but in a race lacking much pace expect Lanerie to employee the classic “stalk and pounce” tactics.
