Racing TV presenter Angus McNae highlights a trio of additional horses to follow plus shares his two best bets at Ascot on Tuesday.
This week's edition of The Verdict highlighted five lightly-raced horses, listed below, who look certain to go onto better things. All are worthy of a place in your Racing TV Tracker. If you haven't already, you can also watch the full show on our YouTube page.
Extra horses to follow
I have three extra races I would like to discuss in this week's The Verdict Extra column, and also a few selections for Royal Ascot.
Horse: Caviar Heights.
sandown-park
14:40 Sandown-Park - Friday June 16
This was the race won by Sunway, whose performance was highlighted on The Verdict. Newcomer Caviar Heights finishing behind him in fourth and shaped with a good deal of promise.
Visually, he could be seen travelling strongly three furlongs out having been held up, but he looked too green thereafter to make a sustained challenge. However, he was staying on well when the penny eventually started to drop.
The Course Track sectionals are illuminating. This was quite a strongly run contest for two-year-olds over seven furlongs, with the winner recording a finishing speed percentage (FSP) of 104.65% which suggests he finished the race strongly.
Equally, Caviar Heights was strong at the finish having recorded an FSP of 103.73%.
The pace quickened in the fifth furlong and this is where Caviar Heights got a bit lost, with just two of the nine strong field slower than him.
His final three furlongs was the second best in the race, though, and below is a final three furlong comparison with the winner.
Sunway: 36.37s.
Caviar Heights: 37.06s.
Whilst Sunway won easily, Caviar Heights fired the second-fastest final three furlongs in the race, and a closer look at the Course Track sectionals reveal that he was strong in the final furlong compared to the rest of the field.
He went through that furlong in 12.90s and was the only contender, aside from the winner, to dip under 13.00s in that final furlong.
Caviar Heights is one to be with next time out.
Horse: Another Investment.
york
16:45 York - Friday June 16
This four-year-old is something of a York specialist, with both of his wins coming at the track. This was his first success in a handicap and there may be some temptation to regard this victory as a fluke, but the Course Track sectionals suggest it was simply an improved effort, and the best of his career.
He won easily by five lengths to dominate this class three contest and recorded an FSP of 103.01%.
This, combined with a look at the FSP’s of the other runners, tells us that the race was quite strongly run. Ten of the 16 runners recorded a figure under 100 meaning that they were tiring through the final three furlongs. It also tells us there was no hiding place out there.
Another Investment travelled strongly and was the only contender in the race to dip under 11.00s in both F4 and F5. He recorded 10.89s and 10.99s, and on the the back of those two rapid furlongs, he was then the fastest in the subsequent two furlongs.
In terms of sectionals, this was a totally dominant performance, and a glance at the final three furlongs is a good way of displaying her dominance. Here is a comparison with the second and third placed runners.
1 - Another Investment: 34.46s.
2 - No Nay Nicki: 35.79s.
3 - Riot: 35.36s.
Another investment is in rude health and can defy a rise in the weights next time out.
Horse: Carrytheone
leopardstown
17:55 Leopardstown - Thursday June 15
This horse can be given a considerable sectional upgrade in finishing third in this Group Three contest as he was slowly away plus was inconvenienced by how the race was run.
The FSP for the winner (Ocean Jewel) was 107.35% which highlights that this was a steadily run race, with a fast finish, and no contender finished the race faster than Carrytheone.
His final three furlongs of 34.74s was the quickest in the race, but the problem was he ran those three furlongs from a position from which he had little chance of winning due to being slowly into stride.
He finished off the contest strongly as he was the only horse to dip under 12.00s for that furlong recording 11.97s, with the winner recoding a 12.13s sectional
He is clearly in good form, so is worth following, and a similar Group Three contest is well within his grasp.
Two selections for Royal Ascot on Tuesday:
Isaac Shelby
General odds: 8-1 (each-way).
Consistently underrated, he produced a very big time figure when successful in the Greenham at Newbury, and a repeat of that gives him every chance here. I rate him as a strong each-way play.
Cadillac
General odds: 9-1.
Featured on The Verdict when winning at Epsom last time out where the Course Track sectionals highlighted a stunning turn of foot. He is a class act, as is his jockey James McDonald, and is worth siding with.
