Watched the show and looking for more? The Verdict presenter Angus McNae looks into the sectionals to spot more future winners.
I had a look at six races in this week’s episode of The Verdict, which you can watch above. The overriding theme last week were the success of horses ridden prominently in races run at steady gallops.
Maybe the easier ground has led jockeys to be more circumspect in terms of pace. Below are four exra races for your consideration, including one at Epsom this afternoon.
1. A strong Queen
newmarket
13:25 Newmarket - Friday August 26
The first race
at Newmarket last Friday was won by a Ralph Beckett-trained newcomer called
Lose Yourself. She still looked weak and open to more improvement, but it’s a horse further back in the field that the Course Track (CT) sectionals point to as being worth following.
Fortis Regina finished third amid inexperience and deserves a place in your RTV tracker. She was very slowly away and was the slowest horse in the nine-horse field through the opening furlong (16.85sec). That put her on the back foot from a positional point of view, particularly as the race was steadily run.
The CT sectionals tell us that the finishing speed percentage (FSP) for the winner was 108.38%. As such, she got first run and was impossible for a green newcomer who missed the break to run down.
Nonetheless, Fortis Regina did finish the race off strongly and was fastest in the race through the final three furlongs. Here are her splits in comparison to the winner.
Lose Yourself: F5 : 11.32s F6 : 11.44s F7 : 12.29s
Fortis Regina : F5 : 11.16S F6 : 11.20s F7 : 12.49s
This amounts to a final three furlong comparison of 35.05s for Lose Yourself and 34.85s for Fortis Regina.
Fortis Regina looks likely to win a similar race in the near future. Further back in the field there should be an honorary mention for Ananda, who like Fortis Regina is trained by John and Thady Gosden and was the first string here.
This filly flashed plenty of ability in being the fastest through the fifth furlong at 11.06. She paid for that premature effort late on, finishing fourth, but clearly has plenty of ability.
2. When the rain comes
Ainsdale finished fourth in the
Listed 5f Beverley Bullet on Saturday on good ground. It was a splendid effort on just his second start for Julie Camacho and given that all his four career wins have come on soft or heavy ground he looks to be a horse to follow this autumn on easy ground. He will also benefit from a return to 6f.
Those factors are all clear to see in the form book, but what we cannot tell is what kind of form he is in and the CT sectionals tell us he is in great shape and ready to win.
This was an evenly run race, the winner Tis Marvellous recording an FSP of 101.79. Ainsdale was a little outpaced and was briefly hampered against the rail before finishing the race off strongly into fourth.
He never really opened up until the final furlong, where he came home faster than the first three home. Details of the final furlong splits are below.
1st Tis Marvellous: 13.08s. 2nd Arecibo: 13.38s. 3rd King of Stars: 13.41s. 4th Ainsdale: 12.86s
That final furlong by Ainsdale was achieved without being subjected to a hard ride and this horse is clearly in good form. Look out for him when conditions are more in his favour, especially if upped to 6f
3. Back of the Net
Cool Party was 2-11 favourite to win the
restricted maiden at Epsom on Tuesday and he duly obliged, but not without being given a scare by
Kyogo, a Michael Bell newcomer.
Kyogo shaped with promise, racing in the white and green stripes of Celtic for whom Japanese star Kyogo Furuhashi plays as a forward. The early pace was pedestrian as evidenced by the FSP of 118.35%. Furlongs two to five read as follows: F2: 14.8s. F3: 14.46s. F4: 13.46s. F5: 12.43s
Then in furlong six, the newcomer kyogo was asked to sprint and his response was impressive. He raced into a three-length advantage firing off three quick furlongs: F6: 11.14s. F7: 10.57s. F8: 10.74s
This was an impressive burst, which briefly had the favourite in trouble. But Kyogo paid for that effort and weakened inside the final furlong, and Cool Party outstayed him. Kyogo has a similar race in him if his speed can be harnessed and his challenge timed better.
4. Politeness Personified
Greycious Anna showed much improved form to get off the mark at the third time of asking for Karl Burke at Redcar on Saturday and she is a smart two-year-old on the evidence of the clock.
She was the fastest through five of the seven furlongs, displaying her complete superiority over this field and leaving two previous winners in her wake.
This was a step up in trip from 6f to 7f for her, but she would have won at 6f and her improvement can be put down to her suddenly realising what was required.
Her splits read as follows with furlong five at 10.89s being particularly impressive: F3 : 11.46s. F4 : 11.25s. F5 : 10.89s. F6 : 11.35s. F7 : 11.91s.
She comfortably fired the fastest three furlongs at 34.15sec and was the only horse in the race to dip under 12sec in the final furlong. She deserves a chance in much better company.
