CLICK HERE TO ENTER TO THE TOTE TEN TO FOLLOW COMPETITION The emphasis of the Tote Ten To Follow competition is very much on Grade One winners, so it is only worth looking at horses you think are going to be the champions in their field and hoping they have a few runs along the way.
Finding dark horses is perhaps for another competition and the winning ticket will contain horses that have avoided injury and had a clear run at things. Hopefully, these will all still be in good form by March.
1. A PLUS TARD
Is a year younger than his stablemate, Minella Indo, who beat him in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and he didn’t enjoy the perfect run through that race. He only had three runs last term and his trainer has an enviable task in keeping his two aces apart for some races. I would be hopeful A Plus Tard can reverse the form next March.
2. APPRECIATE IT
Will no doubt be very short for the Arkle chase if he impresses on his first run over fences and that looks extremely likely. His stamina will stand him in good stead over fences but he showed real speed when backed off the boards to win the Supreme Novices’ last term.
3. BOB OLINGER
Was impressive in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival and he looks special, whether it be over hurdles or especially as a novice chaser. He has raced mainly on soft ground, so might well stay in Ireland until the spring but he should be able to accumulate a few wins.
4. BRAVESMANSGAME
May be an English challenger to top novice chase honours to judge by his recent chasing debut. He will win at least two more in my view before having to take on the biggest of guns.
5. CLOTH CAP
Added poignancy for this horse who at one point was set to go off one of shortest-priced runners for the
Grand National. He disappointed in the big race but is young enough to come back and could even be a candidate for the Gold Cup by the spring.
6. ELLE EST BELLE
Wasn’t beaten far at Cheltenham and might have been closer if not getting too far behind. She then ran to a similar level at Aintree in the big mare’s bumper. She will be taking on her own sex most of this season and will win plenty.
7. HONEYSUCKLE
Is the outstanding mare and will have the allowance in all the Championship races and it is tough to see many geldings ever giving her the weight.
8. KILCRUIT
Is more stamina laden than Sir Gerhard so may well be plotting a different course through the season. He’s currently favourite for the Ballymore.
9. SHISKIN
It is less competitive in England in the top two-mile events and he might have a clear run through to Cheltenham. All things being equal he will give it a real serious go at Cheltenham and Aintree.
10. SIR GERHARD
Will be aimed at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle should everything go right. He demonstrated a real turn of speed in his bumpers, especially at Cheltenham.
