Andy Stephens looks ahead to the opening day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival with the help of the RaceiQ numbers.
✅ 2.25 AL HUDAIBA
Al Hudaiba has not looked the easiest of rides but would be unbeaten in four starts but for jinking and unseating his rider in the closing stages at Yarmouth in late May.
He's since made amends with successive wins on the July Course at Newmarket, doing well to catch Abraham Lincoln last time after that horse got first run on him in the Superlative Stakes. Only fourth a furlong out, he produced a final split of 12.54sec to get up close home..
Al Hudaiba is responsible for three of the top four speeds in this contest plus has had the highest Finishing Speed Percentage in each race he has completed.
Haffner is challenging him for favouritism but was allowed to boss slow fractions when making all at Newmarket last time. He had been put in his place by Abraham Lincoln before that.
❌ 3.00 LAKE FOREST
Lake Forest is hot favourite for the Lennox Stakes after his staying-on fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, having previously hacked up at Haydock.
However, the RaceiQ data tells us that the hold-up horses, such as him, will at a big disadvantage here, with the Actual versus Expected for horses ridden this way being just 0.38.
He's routinely slow to get to 20mph with his past ten "form figures" from the gates reading 6877705988550.
Lake Forest could not get to grips with Witness Stand in this race last year, having been 1.28sec (in the region of eight lengths) behind him after two furlongs.
That rival will again be standing in his way, as will another course specialist in Qirat, who is 3-3 at Goodwood and was a shock 150-1 winner of the Sussex Stakes 12 months ago.
✅ 3.35 SCANDINAVIA
Scandinavia can confirm himself as the best stayer around by retaining his Goodwood Cup crown.
He's won his past seven races and is unbeaten since being equipped with cheekpieces in the past year.
He was faster than Illinois in each of the final five furlongs when overhauling his stablemate in this race 12 months ago.
And he dug deep to claw back Trawlerman in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on his latest start, when fastest of all the runners in each of the final three furlongs.
The long striding four-year-old is a relentless galloper but also has the three highest top speeds of these in the RaceiQ database. He hit 40.52mph when taking this prize last year.
✅ 5.55 SECRET HISTORY
Secret History drops down to 6f here but is not short of speed, as she showed when unleashing two very fast furlongs to win over 7f at Newmarket last time.
That win needs marking up as she was held up in a steadily run race, being only ninth with two furlongs to run after racing keenly. The Time Index of the race was 2.7, when the meeting average was 5.8.
her Finishing Speed Percentage "form" reads 112161. The one blip was when failing to get home over the best part of a mile at Carlisle.
Her 4lb rise for winning at Newmarket is offset by Ashley Lewis taking off 5lb, and he has ridden eight winners from 41 rides for Ed Walker this year.
