Top presenter Angus McNae shares his selections across Newmarket and Hamilton on Sunday, all live on Racing TV. 3.05 Hamilton: Sallaal
Roger Varian has a good record with runners that he sends to Hamilton, and Sallaal looks likely to enhance that record.
He was sent off at 7-2 to win the bet365 Feilden Stakes at the Craven meeting, but in what was a strongly-run race, he pulled too hard and was well beaten by the useful Almeric.
The three-year-old has his sights significantly lowered here, and drops back a furlong in trip which, given his keen-going nature, is a sensible move.
He had looked to be a smart prospect when winning on his debut at Yarmouth last year and this is an ideal opportunity for him to get back on track.
3.35 Newmarket: Lake Victoria
Lake Victoria and Desert Flower stand head and shoulders above their rivals here, and preference is for the Aidan O'Brien-trained filly. Neither can be split in terms of achievement, or speed figures, but I am swayed by conditions.
Desert Flower produced her best performance in the Bet365 Fillies' Mile last season when there was plenty of give in the ground, and conditions will be quicker than that here.
By contrast, Lake Victoria is very versatile and handled firm ground when she won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and that just tips the balance in her favour for me.
3.45 Hamilton: Detective
This versatile performer returned to the Dianne Sayer yard last time out at Musselburgh and produced one of his best efforts on the flat.
He ran on strongly in the closing stages, and is clearly in good form, plus that effort came off a rating of 68, and he gets to race off the same mark here.
Paul Mulrennan, who has won on him before, will be back on board for the first time in a while on Sunday, and the return to a stiff track will suit his strong finishing style.
In an open race, he looks to be the value play at a decent price.
5.20 Newmarket: Merchant
I think William Haggas will strike with this colt making his handicap debut off a rating of 82.
He caught the eye in defeat on his first two starts before winning narrowly at Wolverhampton where he was inconvenienced by the run of the race, and deserves an upgrade.
That narrow win in a modest contest means that the handicapper may have underestimated him, and he can show what he is really made of here before going on to better things.
