Heffernan and Sameshima pick up Royal Ascot whip bans

Seamie Heffernan has picked up a 24-day ban and a £2,800 fine for his winning ride on Thesecretadversary.
The Irish jockey enjoyed a successful week at Royal Ascot, with his three rides providing two wins courtesy of Nola Soul in the Chesham Stakes alongside Thesecretadversary in the Jersey Stakes.
However, the whip review committee decreed that he used his whip above the permitted level when landing the Jersey Stakes, and he will now sit out the period between Monday, July 20 and Wednesday August 12, ruling him out of potential rides at the Galway festival and Glorious Goodwood.
The ban is the latest for the experienced rider, who picked up up a 22-day suspension for overuse of the whip in the 2023 Prix du Jockey Club, and, more recently, was handed a 14-day ban under the non-trier rule following Eben Zaabeel’s effort at Limerick.
Meanwhile, Japanese rider Katsuma Sameshima will be banned for a week in July after he failed to give his mount Lugal time to respond in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes after using his whip twice in the final furlong.
