Betting expert Dave Nevison has set his sights on solving the Bunbury Cup plus John Smith's Cup on Saturday. Watch how his selections fare on Racing TV.
2.12 Newmarket: Miss Nightfall
I have absolutely no doubt that this James Fanshawe-trained filly is ahead of her mark and could be considerably better than an 89-rated horse.
The slight concern is that she has only won one race, but she has evidently been unlucky or hit trouble on more than one occasion.
She will go off favourite, deservedly so, and hopefully things will go her way on this occasion.
She was a well-backed favourite but was hampered two out in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot, which ruined her chance of finishing in the frame.
This is less competitive and she is back down to 7f, which may well be her ideal trip. In truth, it looks a straightforward opportunity.
2.50 Newmarket: More Thunder
This prestigious 7f handicap is the obvious next step for More Thunder, who was narrowly beaten in the Wokingham last time.
His many supporters suffered heartbreak at Ascot, as he got going just a fraction too late, hit traffic and Tom Marquand to have an issue with his reins. He was still only beat a short head and should have won a length.
It has definitely been a masterstroke of Haggas’ to drop this gelding down to 6f this season but he has looked in all three of his runs for the yard that in fact 7f is his trip.
There looks likely to be significant improvement coming and in a smaller field than usual he looks the only unexposed runner. Marquand will be absolutely on his mettle this Saturday, I am sure.
The Lost Sock: join him on his journey
3.10 York: Romieu
It is 15 years since a three-year-old won this race and while the claims of the William Haggas-trained Archivist are obvious, after he bolted up over course and distance last time, his odds are cramped.
Romieu is my each-way alternative. The career of Elizabeth Gale has certainly been turbo charged by her win in Ireland for Joseph O’Brien recently and Adrian Keatley is the the latest trainer to utilise her 5lb claim.
Romieu ran really well despite not getting the best of runs at Newcastle last time and this lightly raced former Andre Fabre inmate may well have improvement in him. The trip and ground look ideal and he could reach a place here, at the least.
5.25 York: Juan Les Pins
The sprint handicap this one contested last weekend was reminiscent of a dodgem car race, and Juan Les Pins was one of the main sufferers for sure.
He might well have won with a clear run through and it is surely a matter of time - hopefully a very short time - before Mick Appleby gets a win out of him.
The veteran sprinter is absolutely thrown in at the weights these days and it was not long ago that he was contesting Group class events as well as 0-105 handicaps, so a mark of 80 is almost an insult to his talent.
Juan Les Pins has got a favourable low draw and, with a strong pace on the cards, this could be the race where everything finally works out for him.
