2.20 Lingfield: Gogo Yubari
Harry Vigors is a 7lb claimer going very well this winter and has another live chance here. Gogo Yubari is also having a good time of it having slipped to a basement mark recently.
He has won two of his last three, firstly over this course and distance, and last time out at Southwell. He is now back up to a mark of 60, but he has back form running well off marks in the mid 60s in the not very distant past and, now that he is back in form and with a hot 7lb claimer on board, his chance is obvious.
3.10 Newcastle: Alpine Sierra
It has been a while since this now eight-year-old won, but he has the look of a handicap good thing here.
Jim Goldie’s gelding has been dropping down the weights for a while, but the handicapper seems to have been generous in dropping him 3lb for what was in fact a pretty good effort last time out.
He finished fifth, beaten less than four lengths in a 0-70 handicap at this track and will be suited by this step back up in trip. He now finds himself on a mark 9lb lower than his latest win, which also came over this course and distance.
The jockey booking of Eirann Cagney, probably the best amateur around currently, takes the eye in a big way and it seems the stars are aligned for an overdue win.
3.17 Kempton: Double Powerful
Double Powerful’s form figures this season look completely different to this time last year when he was rapidly racking up a string of victories. Neil Mulholland's charge put up a very promising effort on his chasing debut at Cheltenham, but failed to complete on two recent attempts over fences.
Chasing was then abandoned and he was switched back to hurdles for his latest run, which also ended up with something falling in front of him and his rider being unseated.
The seven-year-old gelding’s luck must change eventually and he is back to a course and distance where he finished s solid third on his penultimate start last season, and might just go off at a massively inflated price.
His final race last season, at Aintree, was his best run over hurdles and, provided recent misfortune hasn’t had a debilitating effect, I feel Double Powerful might well be able to go well in a competitive race that will be run to suit.
3.47 Newcastle: Just Typical
Just Typical hit form in January last year, winning four races at this track, including two with Billy Loughnane on board. He continued his improvement on the turf, but might have more to come now that he has returned to the all-weather.
He hasn’t done badly in two recent course runs over 7f, but looks very much as though the return to today’s mile trip will suit him well.
