3.17 Perth: Cosmic Soul
This six-year-old is on a role having won his past four starts in handicaps (including one on the flat at Southwell) and the manner of his easy win at Sedgefield last time out suggests he can defy a 6lb rise in the weights, and strike again.
His yard tend to target races at Perth, and this may well have been the target for a while. He has been given a month off to freshen up, and Brian Hughes is booked, which all points to another big run from Cosmic Soul.
3.35 Goodwood: Botagoz
Botagoz won her first two starts before finishing a good third in Listed company at York behind the useful Lilt. She was held up in last place that day in a race that was very steadily run to halfway, but she ran on strongly, with her final four furlongs all rated faster than the RaceiQ par.
In the circumstances, she did well to get as close to the winner as she did, and deserves a sectional upgrade. The step up in trip to ten furlongs looks sure to suit, given that her dam was a very useful winner at this trip.
4.10 Goodwood: Hermetic
Hermetic was a €105,000 purchase from the Christophe Ferland yard in France. He won twice for his former handler, and shaped with distinct promise for Ian Williams on his handicap debut at York in a strong handicap off a rating of 82.
He got to the front three furlongs out before tiring and fading into fourth behind the well-treated Master Builder. That contest looks sure to work out well, and its a bonus that Hermetic has now been dropped a pound to 81.
The selection is a smart recruit for a yard that does well with this type of horse.
4.45 Goodwood: Tenability
Tenability looked progressive last season and showed that there could be more to come as a four-year-old when an excellent third on his seasonal reappearance at Newbury in the John Porter.
He shaped like he would be better for the run having travelled strongly throughout, and the soft conditions will be ideal for him.
He can make the most of the 5lb he receives from his stable companion Hamish, whom he finished in front of in last year's Cumberland Lodge at Ascot.
