Ryan Moore: “tough competitor” Gstaad a big threat to Bow Echo

World Pool ambassador Ryan Moore believes that the rhythm of Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes will suit the improving Gstaad as he locks horns once more with his 2000 Guineas conqueror Bow Echo.
Racing TV presenter Nick Luck caught up with Moore – who was recently awarded the MBE in the King’s birthday honours – ahead of Royal Ascot, and the leading jockey explained that he expects the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Gstaad to have progressed again.
“I think he'll really enjoy Ascot,” Moore explained. “He was impressive in the Coventry there and I think he'll appreciate going around a bend; I think the rhythm of the race will suit him.
"He ran a great race in the Guineas - the winner was exceptional on the day - but he's come back and he's won at The Curragh. I suppose you'd say, well, the third horse got closer to him, but a different racetrack, different day. I was happy with him on both occasions.
“He's a big, strong colt. I think he's a pretty tough competitor. I expect him to keep improving.”
In a wide-ranging interview that also covered the fallout from his mount Benvenuto Cellini being ruled a non-runner in the Derby, Moore and Luck also discussed the difficult choice that could lie ahead in Friday’s Coronation Stakes.
The jockey chose to ride Precise when True Love won the 1000 Guineas, and was then aboard True Love when her stable companion took the Irish equivalent at The Curragh.
Moore said: “We’ve got it wrong three times already this year [including Derby winner Christmas Day]!
“Aidan [O’Brien, trainer] sees them every day and he’ll do what he thinks is the right thing. We’ll talk about and see what happens.
“He'll know what I'm thinking and he'll give his opinion. And then it's up to me what I do with that. It's obviously annoying if you're on the wrong one, to say the least.”
O’Brien is searching for a record-extending twelfth win in the Coventry Stakes and saddles Confucius – the mount of Moore - and Great Barrier Reef who lead another strong team of two-year-olds at the Royal Meeting.
Moore told Luck: “He was just a bit green [on debut] - he went quick and got there and got beaten in a photo- and then he won with Wayne [Lordan] at Naas. He looks a nice horse.
“Great Barrier Reef, who won the group race on Guineas weekend, has obviously got talent, too.”
