Broke a blood vessel when last of 12 (started 5-2 favourite) in a Group Two at York on last start in May. Has won two Group Threes and the fiercely competitive Ayr Gold Cup but still needs something like a career best to even pick up significant prize money.

Jockey: Paul Hanagan

General odds: 40-1

Unseated Paul Hanagan in the starting stalls on latest start at Royal Ascot, which followed three disappointing runs. A Listed win at Doncaster last November is his only success in his last 10 races, and he is not expected to trouble the main contenders this time.

Trainer: David O'Meara

Jockey: Danny Tudhope

General odds: 66-1

Landed valuable handicap at York last autumn and showed his best form so far when second in an all-weather Group Three last time out. Looks very ambitious to now attempt an ultra-competitive Group One with only a 10-day break.

Trainer: Henry Candy (Won 2016 July Cup with this horse)

Jockey: Harry Bentley

General odds: 5-1

Had excuses at the Breeders' Cup (wrong trip) and at Meydan (ground turned soft). Arguably unlucky last time in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes when third after late traffic woes. Harry Bentley returns to the saddle but last year's winner is beginning to look too vulnerable to be a strong fancy.

General odds: 66-1

Has failed to finish in the top two from five attempts at Listed and Group Three level combined. The suggestion is that he does not really belong in this grand company.

Produced the most eye-catching run in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, having been sixth inside the final furlong to show the fastest late pace of all and closed to within a neck of The Tin Man. Had earlier shown benefit of first-time cheekpieces in his Group Two win at York. Possibly more of a danger with cut in the ground.

Trainer: James Fanshawe (Won 2004 July Cup with Frizzante)

Jockey: Tom Queally

General odds: 6-1

Has an interesting profile in that since July 2015 he has won and lost alternating races 11 times straight, suggesting he may suffer from bounce factor issues. That said, Group One wins at Ascot last October and three weeks ago represent tremendous form and this five-year-old has more big-race wins in him.

Trainer: Aidan O'Brien (three July Cup wins: 1999 - Stravinsky, 2001 - Mozart, 2010 - Starspangledbanner)

Jockey: Ryan Moore

General odds: 11-10

Unbeaten in six runs, he faced his first real test when he landed a strong renewal of the Commonwealth Cup last month. Still performed admirably to make up plenty of ground late in the day to beat early leader Harry Angel by nearly a length.

Jockey: Adam Kirby

General odds: 7-1

Clive Cox is capable of outstanding results from his classiest horses, particularly sprinters. Harry Angel will surely be too good for the majority of the older horses in the field. Having previously pulled early, he has been allowed to lead in his last two starts, though he could not burn off Caravaggio that way last time at Royal Ascot.

General odds: 66-1

Won a Group Three at the Curragh last summer as a two-year-old but is winless in five starts since and first-time blinkers at Royal Ascot failed to produce any improvement.

A season rather bereft of superstars needs a July Cup winner like CARAVAGGIO, who was given plenty to do by Ryan Moore in the Commonwealth Cup but still managed to reel in the classy Harry Angel with some elan. The unexposed Tasleet looks the sort who could quicken late and give the unbeaten Ballydoyle colt the fiercest test, while it would be folly to totally dismiss the chances of The Tin Man, who has struck up a fine relationship with Tom Queally.
