Rumstar flashes home for repeat Coral Charge success

Today is Coral-Eclipse Day at Sandown Park and for the second year in a row, the opening Group Three Coral Charge over five furlongs went to Rumstar (100-30). The six-year-old, partnered by Rob Hornby, came with a strong run in the final furlong to score by a length from Luna A Inbhir Nis (18-1).
Successful trainer Jonathan Portman said: “He was great at Newmarket and then went to Ascot when everyone was telling me what a good race he’d run and what a great chance he had – and he only beat one horse.
“We were a bit deflated, but he was drawn low that day and maybe that wasn’t the place to be. This race was aways on our minds, having won it last year. He is fun in Group Three company. We get excited and go and enter him in Group One and end up with egg on our face!
“He has put some money back in the kitty today. He’s entered at Goodwood and York. We’re enjoying the ride.
“Today gave me a lot of satisfaction. It’s so competitive with a very thing line between winning and losing. With these sprinters, you’ve just got to just keep rolling the dice and wait for your turn.”
The Listed Coral Distaff over a mile saw Secret Of Life (2-1 Favourite) make all under Rossa Ryan for a comfortable two-and-three-quarter length success.
Winning handler Ralph Beckett said: “She’s a smart filly. You can see the size of her – she’s a big girl and it’s only really in the last three weeks that she’s properly filled her frame.
“We didn’t plan on making the running today but it helped. She was the best filly on the day for sure.
“What happens next, I ‘m not sure. She will step up into Group company now and could maybe step up in trip at some point. We’ll work back from the autumn.”
Beckett was also on the mark today with Tattycoram (11-2) in the Group Two Betway Lancashire Oaks, which this year was switched to Newmarket from Haydock Park due to ground works.
Of her, the trainer added: “It was a good effort. We finished early with her last year as we hoped she could develop from three to four. It looks like that’s the case.
“She went into a dip after winning the Daisy Warwick at Goodwood, hence the two-month break. But I was easy about that and today was a race that was always going to set up well for her.
“I’d imagine she’ll go straight to the Yorkshire Oaks now.”
The good recent run of form enjoyed by Newmarket-based trainer Roger Varian continued in the big handicap of the day, the £120,000 Coral Challenge over a mile, which went to Indalo (9-4 Favourite). The five-year-old came through to challenge entering the final furlong and went on to score by half-a-length from Hard Endeavor (7-1).
Varian said: “He is very talented and very consistent. I need to watch it back – he looked a bit awkward in the straight, but I think he was just trying to get a bit of room and keep his momentum up at the same time.
“He is probably the most genuine horse in training I would think but he is not easy at home. He struggles with a slow to medium canter and always wants to go a stride quicker. I must give a big shout out to Chloe who rides him every day and does a great job in keeping him in check.
“He’s in the Mile at Goodwood and there is the Cambridgeshire again later in the year. He keeps progressing – this time last year he was winning class 4s, so has come a long way in 12 months.
“Hopefully he has got some more big days in him.”
