Rock Montreal provided Godolphin with a ninth win when getting up inside the final furlong of the Emirates Autumn Stakes.
Main market rival Sergei Diaghilev was ridden more prominently than the winner - who had been a closing second in the listed Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster when last seen - and looked as if he may have stolen a march with two furlogns to run, howeer the son of Blue Point made up plenty of ground coming out of 'the Dip'.
Jockeys William Buick and Ryan Moore settled down to battle out the finish, but it was the Roger Varian-trained 11-8 favourite who eventually got on top in the final 100 yards and was in command at the line.
Third home was the fellow Godolphin runner Al Jabbar, who failed to handle the undulations a little before running on again.
Watch: a neck was the winning distance as Rock Montreal won the Group Three contest
Winning rider Buick said: "He dug deep - it was only his third run, but the step up to a mile suited him. He's a top of the ground horse so faster ground would suit him better.
"He's a lovely prospect for next year, there's a bit of furnishing to do but he's got a great mind. I'm very pleased with that.
"You have to consider him for it [the Guineas] but Roger will put plenty of thought into it over the winter. He's a lovely horse."
The winning trainer added: "I was impressed - he made me sweat but it was a good performance.
"As things panned out, it looked like Ryan [Moore] was getting away, he showed some greenness but he did well to race on his own on the far side.
"He learnt more today than what he did at Doncaster. She was a very good filly, and he's confirmed his two good runs today
"He can only improve. He's got loads of size and quality, and I think he will only get quicker as he matures over the winter. He's a horse for next year and we are very excited about him."
The winner was cut to 25-1 for the spring Classic with the majority of bookmakers following his neck success.
