Racing TV podcast: Pro-punter Nick Goff on how he missed out on Into The Sky

Former trader turned pro-punter Nick Goff joined Dan Barber and Martin Dixon and recalled how he had the chance to own the Jim Boyle star, the challenges of his work, plus much more.
The former Coral man has dipped his toe into horseracing ownership in recent years and told the hosts that his most recent dabble could have turned out much better than it has.
Goff explained: “I owned a horse a few years ago with a few other school dads – I roped them in – and we bought a horse together, named after the school our kids are at.
“It was a modest horse but it won a couple of races at Brighton and then got injured and had to be retired.
“So we went to the sales to buy another one – we had £30k between the five of us – and had a vote to see whether we’d go Horses In Training sale or Yearling sale.
“We bought a horse called Jet Packer from Richard Hannon’s that was rated 79 and it’s now rated 54!
“Two weeks to the day before that, Ross Doyle, who does all of the buying for Jim [Boyle], bought a Starman colt – a two-year-old – but we’d decided we weren’t in for a two-year-old that year.
“He’s [Into The Sky] worth £1million and he’s not a Jet Packer!”

The pro-punter also broke down the mindset and methods behind his edge in betting markets, both across football and horse racing.
"I'm really keen to watch every game because no matter what data says, you do get edges from watching, just as you do from racing," he explained. "You can have all the stride data or anything you want, but watching races will always be an edge as well. It's the same with watching football.
“So I've tried to watch as much as I can, but I'm at a stage in life where there are certain things that are non-negotiable. I love my day at Royal Ascot every year. I'm not missing that.

“But I've had to take a slightly different approach to it than I would have done when I first left Coral and first punted full time. Because I made it at the beginning, I made everything about being as professional as I can.
“Now that might not be my persona on Twitter. I'm quite laughy and jokey. But when I left that job and I wanted to punt full time, I didn't know for certain that I could do it.
“So to give myself the best chance possible, I wanted to be as professional as you can. That's how it was. But I've adapted that over time now. And I've got a much better balance of life now.
“After 10 years its still a job, its still a grind, If I don’t get up on Monday morning and re-rate all the divisons, update my outrights and price up the mid-week games – that's not a barrel of laughs
“The best way to describe it is ‘there’s nothing else I’d rather do, but I don’t get up every morning and think “what an exciting day I've got ahead” - it’s not a dream job.”
As well Nick as giving his take on the World Cup, Martin and Dan look ahead to the July Cup and July Festival at Newmarket weighing up this year's big-race contenders.
