Speed is the essential element on the third day of the Ebor Festival at York and I’ve got my eye on a couple of nippy two-year-olds who appeal on the RaceiQ data.
In the Gimcrack Stakes (3.00), it’s the least experienced horse in the line-up who makes most appeal.
Lifeplan has only seen the racetrack once in his career to this point, but the clock suggested strongly that it was a performance of some note.
His win time of 1m 9.88s was 2.35s quicker than our Par Time for the race and rated a 9.1 out of 10 by our Time Index. The average Time Index that day was also only 6.1.
The fractions were strong for a six-furlong race, so it was even more impressive how he galloped to the line. Six horses in the race clocked three sub-11-second furlongs, yet Lifeplan completed the final two furlongs at least 0.1 seconds faster than any other horse in the race.
He looks like a horse that will make his presence felt in the best company, and this looks like an interesting opportunity for him to confirm the promise he showed that day.
In the following Nunthorpe Stakes (3.35), I’m expecting Lady Iman to take full advantage of the feather-weight she is able to carry relative to her rivals as a two-year-old filly.
She demonstrated at Goodwood why she is so well suited to a sharp five furlongs. She has hit speeds of more than 42 mph in every race she has run in, and last time in the Molecomb hit a 43.63mph.
She clocked three sub-11-second furlongs, but then still managed to maintain her run to the line with an 11.86 second final furlong. This sort of run style will suit York as well, where the emphasis will be on both pure speed and then stretching that speed out all the way to the line.
She is also drawn favourably in stall four, which has historically given its occupants an advantage of 0.48 lengths compared to their rivals according to our Draw Advantage index.
Seen alongside the fact that she can carry at least 22lb less than most of her main rivals, Lady Iman looks to have a huge amount in her favour here.
