As we reach the end of the summer,
Humidity might not be the word on everyone’s lips, but I like his chances at
Newmarket in today’s Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes (1.50) as he tries a mile for the first time.
He was a decisive winner of the Chesham Stakes over seven furlongs at Royal Ascot, dictating matters from the front, and galloping his rivals into the ground. He wasn’t the fastest horse in the race, clocking only the third fastest Top Speed of the field, but his final furlong time of 12.8 seconds was quicker than every other runner in the race, illustrating how powerfully he saw the trip out.
Next time at Goodwood, he found the course too sharp, attempting similar tactics, but lacking the turn of foot into the straight. His Top Speed of 39.5mph was only faster than three of his rivals, with Morris Dancer clocking 40.74mph in the penultimate furlong for context.
Sandown once again demonstrated his potential over further, as he finished runner up in the Solario Stakes. He was the joint fastest once again through the final furlong, despite receiving interference, and looking deeper into his stride data backs up even further why a mile today should be right up his street. He has recorded the largest average stride length in all of his races, and the largest peak stride length in all but one – this means that he is able to bowl along efficiently, using less energy to cover the ground.
In the Cheveley Park Stakes (2.25) it’s hard to look past the favourite
Royal Fixation.
She has looked mightily impressive in two victories this season, and her only defeat came at the sword of Venetian Sun in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes in July. However, that form has worked out well, with Venetian Sun finishing ahead of Wise Approach in Deauville next time.
It was her complete dominance of the field in the Lowther at York that really impressed me.
She was ridden cold at the back of the field, so Willia Buick must have been cursing when the pace slackened through furlongs two and three. That was to prove no problem for this filly though, as her sharp turn of foot made easy work of her rivals.
She was the only horse to clock a Top Speed faster than 41mph, but despite doing that three furlongs from home, she maintained her pace well to the line. Her final furlong time of 12.24 seconds was at least 0.09secs quicker than any other horse in the race.
Most of her rivals come here with questions still to answer, whereas in my opinion, this filly has very little to prove.
