1.30 Roscommon: A Good Yarn
Karrygrant sets the benchmark in Roscommon’s opener, but the newly blinkered recent Killarney runner-up has had plenty of chances. Therefore, it could pay to side with the less exposed J P McManus-runner A Good Yarn.
The Calyx gelding, the first foal from a 7f AW-1m turf winner, has shaped encouragingly on both starts at The Curragh. It was understandable that he lacked the pace to challenge – first run for six months – when third to an odds-on favourite a fortnight ago.
This extra furlong should play to his strengths and his trainer Aidan Anthony Howard has saddled three winners (Fianna, Inver Bay, and Not In A Hurry) from his last eight runners.
1.47 Musselburgh: Motawaared
Motawaared was 2lb ‘well-in’ when making it 19th-time lucky at Ayr last week but escapes a penalty for that Apprentices’ Handicap win, Kayleigh Williams taking over in the saddle in this Amateurs’ contest. Jim Goldie’s consistent four-year-old is improving, and demonstrably ahead of his current mark.
He finished runner-up to a previous Newcastle winner on his last visit to this track in September (selling handicap). That form line was given a handsome boost when third-placed Callianassa ran out as a comfortable winner of a 20-runner Class 4 at York on Saturday.
3.30 Roscommon: Teoest
Six-time Irish Flat Champion Colin Keane partners Teoest for the first time in the 1m2f Maiden. Jim Bolger’s three-year-old has kept strong company this year, his Dundalk debut fourth to Believed (third in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot) a prime example.
He didn’t fully see out 1m4f (fourth) on his last visit to this track in August, the winner of that race (Magnum Cor) now 95-rated, the runner-up (Almazann) bumping into an O’Brien newcomer next time, and the fifth (Sunny South West) beating Bolger’s Teofil over 2m at Thurles last week.
Runner-up to The Austrian (a winner since) at Listowel last time, dropping back in trip to 1m2f ought to help to unlock the door.
4.45 Kempton: Tredegar Square
James Fanshawe is running at a 22% yearly strike-rate with juveniles, which is well ahead of his five-year average (10%). Tredegar Square, a half-brother to five winners, including the Listed-placed Heathcliff, overcame a wide draw when making a winning C&D debut in August.
Oisin Murphy steps in for Daniel Muscutt (rides at Yarmouth) and this youngster can defy the penalty at the expense of Alberich, who showed clear promise when chasing home Showcasing Glory (runs in the 4.12pm) at Newcastle 17 days ago.
6.15 Kempton: Rhythm Of My Heart
Rhythm Of My Heart has twice found one stronger, including when a beaten favourite (to another James Fanshawe-trained juvenile) on course and distance debut.
However, she raised her game over a mile in testing ground at Goodwood on second start, splitting a pair of subsequent winners - Silverella and Roku Nana - and finishing nine-lengths ahead of sixth-placed Thespian Queen, who reopposes tonight.
Given over six weeks to recover from those exertions, she’s expected to hit the target at the third attempt in this fillies’ novice.
