Kinross camp considering mile move with popular veteran

Connections are considering trying Kinross over a mile for the first time since 2022 when he returns to action this year.
Ralph Beckett’s evergreen eight-year-old was agonisingly denied the last time he tackled eight furlongs at the Breeders’ Cup that year and has since campaigned exclusively at the six- or seven-furlong distance he has regularly excelled.
However, his team are now keen to try something different and Jamie McCalmont, racing manager for Kinross’ owner Marc Chan, said: “Kinross is really good. He hasn’t worked yet, but we’re looking forward to probably trying him over a mile at some point and seeing how that works.
“There are no plans set in stone at this stage and I’ll leave that to Ralph, but he couldn’t be in any better shape.
“Marc is keen on it and Ralph thinks it’s a good idea and it is something we will try, but we would want conditions to be right.”
Kinross took his career tally to 11 when winning Doncaster’s Park Stakes but with £2million in career earnings looming, he is unlikely to go in search of overseas riches as his team look to enjoy the latter stages of the popular gelding’s stellar career.
“I don’t think we would go international, I think he has done too much for us to start shipping him around the world and we’re in the latter stages of his career,” continued McCalmont.
“Every race is a bonus as far as we’re concerned right now and with the fans and the love the horse has in the yard, we don’t want anything to happen to him.”
