Katie Midwinter's Friday tips: five selections from around the tracks

By Katie Midwinter
Last Updated: Thu 3 Sep 2026
Former Tipstar champ Katie Midwinter has five selections at four meetings including Haydock, Down Royal and Kilbeggan - all live on Racing TV on Friday.

3.47 Haydock: Boston Dan (E/W)

Equipped with a first-time tongue-tie and dropping in class from a lowered mark of 77, Boston Dan could fare better than in previous outings so far this season. He did put in a creditable effort when fourth to Calico Blue at Chester in July, shaping as though he still retains some ability, and is 9lb lower in calmer waters here.
The three-year-old colt achieved a career-high mark of 97 as a juvenile last season following a second-placed effort to Division in a Listed York contest. He had previously finished a good second at odds of 66-1 to Song Of The Clyde in the valuable Goffs juvenile race at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, following a few promising runs in novice and maiden company.
Whilst he's yet to fire this term, he showed enough on the Roodee to suggest he may be worth keeping the faith in, therefore from a lower mark in this company, he could put in an improved effort.

5.25 Ascot: Golden Brown (E/W)

The Ed Walker-trained Golden Brown could improve for this step up to seven furlongs. He didn't run his race at Salisbury when last seen on the back of a 60-day break, but things didn't pan out favourably for him that day and he was staying on well from the rear in his penultimate run over six at York behind Thunder Call.
On the Knavesmire in June, the son of Galileo Gold was seen making up ground late from a very difficult position, finishing only a length-and-a-quarter behind fifth-placed First Legion, who didn't seem to see out his race strongly on that occasion. On that run, the extra furlong should suit Golden Brown better and he could put in a bold bid under Tom Marquand.
As a juvenile, he finished a close second to Sands Of Spain in a Newcastle novice event before achieving a fourth-placed finish in a competitive Goodwood nursery and went on to place behind Ardisia in Listed company at Redcar. Still unexposed in handicap company, there could be more to come from the gelding and a mark of 81 may prove workable.

5.30 Down Royal: Thelymitra (E/W)

Handicap debutante Thelymitra is an interesting contender for Joseph O'Brien in first-time cheekpieces.
The daughter of Australia is making her fourth start following three appearances in maiden company. She has failed to threaten so far in her races but has been gaining experience and could fare better down the handicap route having shaped with some promise in defeat so far.
Out of seven-furlong winner Elleanthus, the unexposed juvenile is a half-sister to Another Day Done, who recorded a five-and-a-half-length success for this yard in a mile Dundalk handicap earlier this year, earning himself a 12lb rise.
An opening mark of 62 could underestimate Thelymitra, who is related to Listed winner and Group One-placed Mountain Bear, rated as high as 110 during his career. The stable has enjoyed plenty of success already this season and has a good record as well as 25% win-rate with juveniles in handicaps.

6.00 Down Royal: Cozone (E/W)

The Matthew Smith-trained Cozone hasn't run on the Flat in 763 days, but has shown some form in this sphere earlier in his career, winning twice on the level previously.
He's had a recent run over hurdles, when returning from a 79-day break at Downpatrick on Monday, fifth to Bruant on that occasion, and may come on for the outing which should set him up nicely for this challenge.
The nine-year-old is already a dual winner over obstacles this year and, from a mark of 70, makes appeal under Robbie Colgan and could make his presence felt in this staying contest.

6.45 Kilbeggan: Watch The Weather

Ten-year-old gelding Watch The Weather has been in good form of late, making the frame on a number of occasions in competitive handicaps. He gave a good account of himself when third to runaway winner A Snow White Park when last seen at Tramore over 2m6f.
This slight drop in distance could be in his favour and he was a creditable third to Blood Destiny in his penultimate race at Galway. From a workable mark of 122 under 7lb claiming Paddy Cody, the experienced performer could be worth keeping onside in current form.
He has proven he still retains plenty of ability and is capable of posing a threat in big-field handicaps.
