Night In Vegas
There will undoubtedly have been more talented juveniles seen on a racecourse this season, and several whose achievements at the highest level will ultimately carry greater significance, but it is difficult to think of one who has been campaigned to better effect than Night In Vegas. The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained colt signed off a remarkable first season with a last-stride victory on British Champions Day at Ascot, taking his record to six wins from eight starts and his career earnings beyond £700,000. For a horse who cost just £60,000 as a yearling, that represents an extraordinary return on investment.
His victory in the six-furlong conditions contest was arguably his most satisfying yet, not least because it provided further evidence that his progression has continued well beyond the point at which his form initially appeared to have plateaued. A fifth-place finish in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, followed by third in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, suggested that Group Two company might expose the limitations of an otherwise thoroughly likeable juvenile. Both were perfectly respectable performances, but neither necessarily pointed towards a colt capable of making significant further improvement.
However, there may have been mitigating circumstances. Johnson Houghton subsequently highlighted the difficulties caused by his feet, particularly during the faster-ground conditions of midsummer, and the switch to glue-on shoes appears to have played an important part in allowing him to fulfil his potential. Rather than having reached his ceiling, Night In Vegas was seemingly operating below his best during those two Group Two assignments, and his subsequent performances have gone some way to suggesting that at the very least he's a Group Two standard colt.
Certainly, his autumn campaign has been one of sustained progression as well as a masterclass in collecting valuable prize money. Following his victory in the lucrative sales race at Newmarket in August, he added another substantial prize at Doncaster in September, before completing his sales-race hat-trick over seven furlongs back at Newmarket in early October.
Eve Johnson Houghton told Racing TV viewers more about Night In Vegas at Ascot on Saturday.
The decision to return to six furlongs at Ascot presented a different examination altogether. Arapaho Gold, a Gimcrack winner, represented established Group-class form, while Satellite Of Love had advertised his own credentials with a Listed success at Redcar since finishing second to Night In Vegas at Doncaster. This was a considerably stronger contest than its conditions-race classification might suggest, and the manner in which the race played out certainly made his task tougher.
With Arapaho Gold and Satellite Of Love forcing the pace, Night In Vegas found himself having to make up ground on rivals who were showing no immediate signs of weakening. Charles Bishop was required to be patient before producing his challenge, and even inside the final furlong it appeared that Arapaho Gold might have done enough. However, Night In Vegas continued to respond, gradually reducing the deficit before getting his head in front in the final stride.
His final prize-money total of £725,399, bettered among juveniles only by Sun Goddess, is testament not simply to his consistency but to some exceptionally astute placement by his trainer. There is a tendency to regard Group-race success as the ultimate measure of a juvenile's campaign, but Night In Vegas has demonstrated the considerable rewards available through a more imaginative approach.
Whether he can translate that progress into Group success at three remains to be seen and given his diminutive size perhaps not likely.
But his connections have every reason to look forward with optimism. For now, six victories, four consecutive successes to finish the campaign and more than £725,000 in the bank represent an outstanding achievement. Surely no juvenile has been campaigned to better effect all season?
Star performance
There can be no denying that Amo Racing have made some expensive mistakes since embarking on an ambitious spending spree designed to bridge the gap to the established superpowers of Coolmore, Godolphin and Juddmonte, but there was plenty to like about the winning debut of MARYLEBONE a €3 million yearling purchase who looks capable of going some way towards justifying her lofty price tag.
The Kevin Philippart de Foy-trained filly was made to work for her success the one mile fillies maiden at Yarmouth. Finding herself engaged in a prolonged duel with the more experienced experienced Avebury Ring before asserting late on in testing, blustery conditions.
Of course much stronger tests will await this half-sister to Diamond Necklace next season but this was a performance that promised considerably more than the bare result, particularly given her trainer’s admission that she had never been asked a serious question at home.
Philippart de Foy described the mile as a bare minimum and was understandably relieved to see such a valuable filly make a successful start. While one maiden victory hardly represents a return on Amo’s considerable investment, Marylebone has at least taken the first step towards suggesting that this particular roll of the bloodstock dice might prove a shrewd one. She looks an exciting prospect for next season.
