John Butler keen to keep going with record-breaking Stand Guard

Stand Guard could race on after his record breaking victory at Kempton on Saturday night. The 13-year-old became the winning-most all-weather performer when registering his 28th victory on an artificial surface in a mile-and-a-half handicap.Stand Guard had previously shared the record with La Estrella, who was retired after taking his total to 27 at Southwell in December 2015.Trainer John Butler reported his stable stalwart in fine fettle on Sunday after his landmark triumph in the hands of Liam Keniry."He got the record and he's good and fine after the race. There's no problem with him," said Butler."We'll assess him during the week, give him a few easy days and make a plan from there. There are races for him."The handicapper will have a say on Tuesday, and we'll see which bracket he is in, but if he's OK there is every possibility he might run again." Though his establishment is at Headquarters, Butler is against an all-weather track being built at Newmarket and he believes Kempton should remain open after shock proposals were unveiled earlier this month. "I'm actually against having an all-weather track at Newmarket," said Butler."I think it would be a shame to close Kempton. If they build a track at Newmarket, so be it, but they should definitely not close Kempton."It's a good all-weather track, it's fair and it's got a fantastic National Hunt track with a lot of history, so you shouldn't be trying to do away with it."
