Jasmine Bliss blossoms to take Lady Protectress crown

Jasmine Bliss put in a determined display at Huntingdon to pick up the Gin And Dubonnet Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase.
Harry Derham’s seven-year-old has been a real moneyspinner for her owners in the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate, winning four of her previous nine starts, and this time added Listed honours to her CV in the hands of Paul O’Brien.
Sent off the 9-4 second favourite behind Faye Bramley’s misfiring 11-8 market leader Paggane, Jasmine Bliss was always prominent and stayed on gamely up the home straight to register a two length win over Tom Lacey’s Piper Park, who loomed up stylishly but could not pass her determined rival.
Derham said: “She toughed it out well. Did we think she could win? Probably not on ratings but we never felt she would have a better chance at picking up some black type than this.
“I can’t take too much credit. If she was owned by me she would probably gone for a handicap somewhere but Noel (Fehily) and Dave (Crosse) thought she could do with some black type and they got a huge result.
“She jumped fantastically well at Kempton and beautifully again today. She’s a lovely mare who has only let us down once when we ran her in desperate ground at Ffos Las. I’m really pleased she’s had a big day like that.”
He went on: “The plan has been to win £100,000 in bonuses and that is around £90,000 in bonuses she’s picked up now, so we need to try and pick up another £10,000.
“She’s won two bumpers, two hurdle races and now a Listed chase and I don’t know what the guys will want to do with her now, but she’s not had much racing this season so she is a fresh horse heading into the spring.”
There was also success for the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate in the Nouvelle Habit Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, where Dan Skelton’s Delta Blues Belle won with a degree of ease as the 2-1 favourite in the hands of his brother, Harry.
In the opening Lockwood Premium British Smocks Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle it was Sam Allwood’s Little Pi (15-8 favourite) that kept on best in the hands of Toby McCain-Mitchell,
There was also a first win under rules for David Bridgewater’s Carpe Diem (10-1), who ran out a commanding 14-length scorer in the Huntingdon Racecourse 2026 Fixtures On Sale Handicap Chase.
