Isaac Newton bounces back in Bahrain Turf Club Desmond Stakes

Audience set out to make all in the Leopardstown Group Three, with favourite Sparan Nua - who had lost her unbeaten record when third in the Irish Oaks last time - close up in second, but Ryan Moore was always tracking the front two on the eventual winner and he was able to sweep through with a winning challenge inside the final furlong on the 10-1 chance. 

The William Haggas-trained Needle Match stayed on for second, with Sparan Nua eventually rallying for fourth behind the long-time leader Audience. 

The win was a second of the season for the Aidan O'Brien-trained three-year-old, but a first at Group level following recent defeats in the Dubai Duty Free International Stakes at the Curragh and the BOYLE Sports Meld Stakes at Leopardstown. 

Speaking to Racing TV, O'Brien was critical of his own training of the horse. He explained: "We didn't do a good job with him. 

"We've probably stretched him a bit too far, we thought being a Camelot he would be a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half horse. 

"But he travels with a lot of pace in all his work – he keeps his head low. He's comfortable over seven [furlongs], but he's a miler. 

"I'd say he's probably a good horse but we did the wrong thing with him – hopefully he will progress more and come back here for the [Group Two] Boomerang [Stakes]."
