Irish raiders among Grand Sefton entries at Aintree

A total of 47 entries have been received for the Boylesports Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at Aintree’s Autumn Raceday (Saturday 5th November). Staged over two miles and five furlongs, the contest is the first of the season to take place over the famous Grand National fences.

Last year’s renewal went to the Peter Bowen-trained Mac Tottie, who demonstrated his liking for the unique Aintree fences when returning in the spring to win the Randox Topham Handicap Chase. The nine year old is entered once again and could aim to become the first dual winner of the contest since it was re-established in 2003.

The Boylesports Grand Sefton Handicap Chase has yet to be won by an Irish-trained horse but that could change in 2022 with four entries hailing from Ireland. These include Grade One scorer Battleoverdoyen (Gordon Elliott) as well as recent Guinness Kerry National runner-up Recite A Prayer (Willie Mullins).

The second race of the season over the Grand National fences is the Boylesports Becher Chase (Saturday 3rd December) – entries for which will be revealed on Tuesday 8th November.

It was recently announced that Boylesports will sponsor both the Grand Sefton and the Becher Chases for the next three years – 2022, 2023 and 2024.
