Five competitive finals feature on a £165,000 card at Nottingham on Tuesday and Dave Nevison shares his best bets for all the action. Enjoy further Flat fixtures from Cork and Beverley live on Racing TV.

3.40 Nottingham: Northern Spirit

I think it seems likely that we will get a good run for our money in this competitive series final.

Brian Ellison’s three-year-old will arrive here fresher than some and has proved himself nothing if not consistent in his career so far. He does have a tendency to hang, but that does not seemed to have stopped him improving throughout the season and this rider knows him well and will be ready to provide assistance from the saddle.

Northern Spirit has finished first and second on his two visits to Colwick Park so clearly acts at this track and, given he is not drawn too far away from the pace, he looks set to get an all-important decent passage before mounting his challenge.

4.25 Nottingham: Olympicus

I really don’t like going back to horse that I’ve previously missed but, having tipped up and backed Olympicus when he ran a decent race at Sandown on his penultimate start, I then missed him last time when he improved to win on the July course at Newmarket.

The reason to stick with him here is that he is bred to be much better than this grade and, now that Mick Appleby has found the key to him winning a race, he might well have unlocked further improvement. Indeed, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time that has happened.

Callum Shepherd seemed to settle Olympicus very well last time and the trip is obviously ideal.

5.00 Nottingham: Militry Decoration

This eight-year-old looks like getting this race run to suit and looks a decent bet to get into the frame at least.

Camilla Poulton’s gelding has been most consistent recently while gradually getting ever closer on recent starts. He went down by just ¾ of a length last time at Bath when keeping on late after not getting the best of runs and Kieran O’Neill takes over now from a 7lb-claiming apprentice from an unchanged mark.

In a very competitive race, Militry Decoration looks a decent bet each-way with extra places on offer.
