5lb claimer Conor Rabbitt seems to have been around for quite a while on the northern circuit, but such is the difficulty of getting rides for young conditionals, it takes time to get the recognition they deserve.
However, the 2023-24 Jumps season looks like being Rabbitt's breakthrough opportunity, and Pay The Piper is certainly one of the highest rated horses I have seen him riding.
I backed the selection on his final two outings last season, and joined in a gamble at Aintree where he was finishing so well following a significant error, which possibly even cost him the race, even though he only finished fifth.
There is no doubt he ran poorly at Ayr on his final outing but he may well have had enough for the season by then. Ann Hamilton’s horses are going well at the moment and Pay The Piper usually runs well at this track, plus he may enjoy this slight drop in grade, with his jockey’s claim easing the burden of top weight.

Mr Alan finished runner-up at the Ayr Gold Cup Festival last season before winning this race, and is plotting the exact same course this year.
He didn’t get quite as close at Ayr this time around, but it was his seasonal debut, and even though he was well backed, he looked as though he might just have needed it.
He got a decent pace to aim at, and came with sustained run up the long Nottingham straight to win last year. It looks like he will get the strong pace that suits him over this trip again here, and with William Buick on board, that might well be enough to counterbalance a 2lb higher mark he has to cope with this time.

When he last ran over hurdles, Feivel looked like a youngster who was a well-handicapped stayer that might well be going places, and he has pretty much confirmed that impression since being switched to fences, and moving to the Stuart Edmunds yard.
He won at Wincanton last season and then ran really well at Sandown in a 0-135 handicap chase, but the fences began to get in the way later on in the season and he fell or unseated when going well on more than one occasion, so has reverted to hurdles here.
I think Feivel is a good horse waiting to happen, and it may be that switching back to the smaller obstacles will just be the confidence booster he needs before getting back over fences.
