1.50 Catterick: Da Vinci Hand
This gelding's two victories over fences were both at Catterick, and the latest success came off a rating of 106 compared to the 89 he is running off here.
Da Vinci Hand is clearly not as good as he once was, but the signs were much better last time out when he finished second, albeit beaten 14 lengths, over this trip.
That was his second run after a wind operation and it certainly stemmed his decline, at least. He was tried in a tongue strap there and plugged on well enough, so the addition of cheekpieces for the first time might hopefully liven him up even further.
He is upped to three miles here but has performed creditably in a hurdle race over this trip, and a stamina test is hopefully what he needs nowadays.
2.25 Catterick: Autumn Return
I tipped this mare last time out and she was backed at all rates down to odds-on, but seriously disappointed, despite plugging on for second.
However, after the shock of the defeat, it might be forgiven as she had been dropped back to two miles there, and definitely found that trip too sharp.
She won her final outing last season over 2m4f, and won over that trip at Musselburgh in November, and it now seems obvious that she needs this extra four furlongs.
She races off top weight again here, albeit off a pound lower mark, but I still think she might well be an improver, and I am happy to give Ruth Jefferson’s mare another chance.
3.35 Catterick: We Still Believe
Landed me a bit of an each-way touch last time out when second at 28-1 at Musselburgh. He finished ahead of Milajess on that occasion, and runs off the same mark here plus there doesn’t look like there is one in the form of Sunday Soldier in this field, so he definitely has a chance to win his first race over hurdles.
We Still Believe has won five races on the Flat, including two last summer, and certainly has much more of a winning habit than most of his rivals. I am happy to give him a chance to go one better on Wednesday.
