George Scott raring to go with James Garfield in Breeders' Cup

Rookie trainer George Scott can hardly wait to saddle his first Breeders' Cup runner when James Garfield goes for the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Friday.

The Exceed And Excel colt has held in his own in smart company this season and was last seen winning the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.

Scott is no stranger to the American racing scene, as before taking out a licence in his own right this year he spent 18 months working on first the East Coast then Santa Anita.

Frankie Dettori rides and Scott is thrilled to have the Italian, having flown in with him on Monday.

Scott, whose charge enjoyed a light canter on the dirt track, said: "I travelled my first horse overseas with a runner in Turkey (in September) and I am conscious of the fact their health has to be closely monitored in transit.

"Some horses thrive on change, while others don't and their temperatures can spike very suddenly.

"It is a question of being vigilant and happily this horse has been as good as gold. I've had only positive reports from the shippers. He's a tough character, he looks great and everything has gone to plan.

"The trajectory of his season meant this was a sensible place to end up, rather than in the Dewhurst, where the ground could have gone soft.

"After the Acomb Stakes, Frankie jumped off and said he could be a Breeders' Cup horse and this is the natural place for him to complete his year. I was very pleased to see on landing that we had got stall seven.

"I am delighted with that, as we have all the options. We can move forward and have the fancied runners that are on our inside in our sights."

He added of having the assistance of Dettori: "It's incredible this is Frankie's first visit to Del Mar to ride, but that has happened through circumstance because Del Mar's season clashes with Europe's.

"He is riding on the undercard for Simon Callaghan and is so pumped - he is just like a kid. He can make magic happen and he will do that this week. I just hope it is for me."
