Five horses to look out for at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting

Andy Stephens selects a handful of horses to keep a close eye on at Newmarket later this week

Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire meeting is always one of the highlights of the autumn with the big handicap on Saturday complemented by seven Group races, three Listed events and a string of usually formative maidens. Here are five to note.

When: 3.45 Thursday

Race: Tattersalls Somerville Stakes

The wonderfully bred colt - he is a son of Frankel out of Attraction - recouped just shy of £8,000 of the whopping 1,600,000 guineas he cost as a yearling when winning a novice event at York on his debut.

Sent off at 10-11 that day amid encouraging bulletins, he had little trouble brushing aside five rivals and won by almost four lengths.

The runner-up had shown ability on his debut and the well-beaten fourth has since got back to winning ways in a nursery at Yarmouth (off a mark of 77). The winning time was slick and Elarqam, 33-1 for the 2,000 Guineas with William Hill, slots into “the could be anything” category.

When: 1.50 Friday

Race: Muhaarar British EBF Rosemary Stakes

Ralph Beckett announced at the weekend that his stable star, Simple Verse, had run her final race but as one door closes another invariably opens and it could be that Amablis helps fill the void.

This daughter of Champs Elysses, owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah, did not build on early promise as a two-year-old but has looked much more the finished article this term - winning in decisive style at Chelmsford (off a mark of 85) and Ascot last time (off her new mark of 94).

In between she failed to make an impact at Glorious Goodwood but was not seen to best advantage that day - being dropped out from a bad draw and staying on when the race was all over.

Amablis is set to be elevated to Listed level but the jump in class should not be beyond her.

When: 3.00 Friday

Race: Shadwell Rockfel Stakes

There is plenty of depth to the Rockfel with September and Nyaleti, who dominated the finish of the Chesham at Royal Ascot, standing out on form.

Gavota will need to raise her game if she is to upstage them but the Bated Breath filly,quoted at 6-1 by bet365, looked well above average when sauntering clear over 7f at Lingfield last time, having previously shown a good attitude to justify strong market support on her debut over 6f at Newmarket.

The Lingfield form is not easy to assess but Gavota, a general 33-1 for the 1,000 Guineas, clearly arrives on an upward curve and is well worth a chance to show what she can do in this higher grade.

When: 1.50 Saturday

Race: Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes

Those who backed Masar down to 11-8 for the BetBright Solario Stakes at Sandown last time (he had been 7-2 a couple of days earlier) never had a moment’s concern as the Godolphin colt powered to an emphatic two-length success over Romanised.

There was plenty to like about the way he went about his business at the Esher track, having previously been a solid third in the Chesham, and the runner-up rates a decent yardstick.

Charlie Appleby believes Masar will not come into his own next year but this step up to a mile should suit and it will not take a smart one to lower his colours.

When: 2.20 Saturday

Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes

This year’s Cheveley Park could be a cracker because Heartache, a dual Group 2 winner over five furlongs, Threading, the unbeaten Lowther victor, and Different League, who landed the Albany, feature among 16 declarations at the five-day stage.

The most intriguing contender, though, has to be Clemmie, who impressed when putting Nyaleti in her place in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket last time after a previous taking success at the Curragh.

A full sister of Churchill, Clemmie was a late withdrawal from the Moyglare Stud Stakes this month because of testing ground but that should not be an issue at Headquarters with a dry week forecast.

Her ante-post odds of 7-4 are not that exciting given the depth of the possible opposition but she will not be one to oppose lightly.
