3.40 Ascot: Flight Leader
The Osborne father and daughter combo is one that I look out for in these big field Ascot handicaps and I am happy to risk a few quid each way on Flight Leader, who might surprise the strong Irish contingent and nick a place at big odds.
He won a Group Three for Andre Fabre in France and, though he wasn’t up to the best when tried in the highest grade, he won his fair share of races and performed consistently.
He ran well enough on his UK debut at Chester last time in a decent handicap and this son of Frankel performed as though he might be suited by this step up in trip here.
He has fared well with the draw here and, if the tongue tie proves to be beneficial, I think he could be a contender for place money.
5.00 Ascot: Oolong Poobong
This is the best fillies' handicap of the year and is extremely tough to work out which line of form is going to prove the strongest, but Ed Bethell’s filly surely must be among the strongest judged on her Haydock win last time out.
She beat one of today’s rivals, Arabian Leopard, by a pretty comfortable two lengths at Haydock and I feel the handicap was not overly tough raising her just 5lb for that success.
Her dam was a winner over a mile and Oolong Poobong was strong at the finish last time, so this step up should suit her well. She looks to be drawn in an ideal slot just wide of the pacesetters and hopefully she can come home strongly.
6.10 Ascot: Red Sand
In another extremely tight handicap, Red Sand is one who is trying something different which may give him the edge if the decision proves a smart move.
The Crisford runner ran encouragingly over five furlongs on his debut at Bath last season and subsequently won twice over further.
He is dropped down to the minimum for this and might be well suited by this cavalry charge given he travels strongly, and could get a very good tow into this from the speed merchants alongside him.
He got no luck in running at York last time, but if getting the breaks under Oisin Murphy he can go close.
