1.50 York: Bullet Point
I have a feeling William Haggas might run Bullet Point again in this Group Three contest, even though it is not the trainer’s usual modus operandi.
Firstly, I don’t know why he would have entered him in this, as well as the handicap he won on day two, if a run wasn’t planned. Secondly ,I think he won so easily on Thursday, and that won’t have taken too much out of him.
I had a decent bet on Bullet Point, but was only briefly concerned I might have lost my money. He had a wall of rivals in front of him about two furlongs out, but it was clear Tom Marquand was going much the best, and he was decisive when the gap came.
Bullet Point won much easier than the margin might suggest, and is already a Group class performer. He should be able to lead in this small field, although doesn’t have to, as he showcased on Thursday, and if Haggas decides to run him, that is good enough for me.
2.25 York: Daiquiri Bay
I believe this prestigious race has had Daiquiri Bay’s name on it for a long time, and he has looked an ideal candidate for something like this ever since making his debut at Newbury as a two-year-old.
He won impressively on his reappearance at Chester, and was then he caught out in a small field at Doncaster. He has since run well when drawn very wide in a big-field handicap at Royal Ascot plus was then, surprisingly, dropped down in trip at Goodwood where he also performed well.
Daiquiri Bay’s dam improved with age and won over this trip and further up to Listed level. Being by New Bay, I think this trip on a conventional track can reasonably be expected to also bring about improvement in the selection.
Some bookmakers are offering four places here, and I will be disappointed if he doesn’t fill one of those.
3.00 York: Ten Bob Tony
Ed Walker’s gelded four-year-old is chalked up at big odds for this newly upgraded Group One, and looks terrific value given the gelding operation appeared to be a positive based on his only run this season when he beat the top-class Kinross.
Rosallion will be a warm favourite for this, and deservedly so, but there are enough holes in the rest of the field to suggest
Ten Bob Tony can reach a place, at least. He was very well backed at Haydock last time, and it seems very likely this lightly-raced contender is a much improved performer this season.
3.35 York: Hipop De Loire
I tipped this Willie Mullins-trained gelding in last year's Sky Bet Ebor, and I'm only just getting over the nightmare run he endured!
Although I am taking less than half the odds he went off at 12 months ago, I am working on the well-proven theory that Mullins doesn’t make the same mistake twice, and hopefully that also applies to Colin Keane, who rides once more.
Although only finishing in fifth, I am pretty sure Hipop De Loire would have gone very close to winning but for being continually stopped in his run. He has had a prep on the flat and scored easily over hurdles since then, and will be primed for this contest now.
