1.50 York: The Man
The Man was seriously impressive on his only start so far this season, which came over this course and distance in May. He has been absent from the track this summer, but I believe the market here might well give us a clue as to whether he has been working alongside recent dual Heritage Handicap winner Two Tribes!
If he has been going well, then I certainly do not think an 8lb rise for his
York win will cause the flying three-year-old that much trouble.
He had a perfect middle draw when winning last time but the next three home in that contest were drawn 6,3 and 1, and The Man looks to be drawn on the right side here of what will inevitably be an arrowhead formation coming down the Knavesmire.
Maybe watch the market before placing a bet, but I am pretty sure Richard Spencer will have his charge primed for this.
4.10 York: Maghlaak
A line can be put through Maghlaak’s Shergar Cup run last week as he was simply left too far out of his ground under a moderate ride. He finished a good second in a hot handicap hurdle at Market Rasen prior to that, and if converting that form to the flat, he may have a better chance than his chunky odds suggest (he's 28-1, at the time of writing).
This trip is, as of yet, unproven on the flat, but I believe it is the way to go with this well-bred six-year-old, and it may actually bring about improvement as he certainly hinted he might be a stayer in his younger days.
The selection has run some good races at this track and his trainer, Adrian Keatley, has his string in very good form, with four winners from his past ten runners before the start of this meeting. There also four places available with some bookmakers here.
4.45 York: Woolhampton
Woolhampton could be the second leg of a big-priced double for P J McDonald, who certainly knows his way up the straight at York better than most. Others in this field of decent fillies have much better form figures than Woolhampton, but she has been running better than her numbers suggest, and is now races off a mark 5lb lower than she won off last season.
On each of her past six outings, she has been badly drawn or ended up behind on the wrong side of the field. She blew the start badly last time at Ascot, and needs to start much better here, but in this massive field of fast fillies, I believe she may not be impeded as much as might be expected in a York sprint.
Woolhampton might well pick off plenty of runners late on and go very close, so I'm siding with her at the general 16-1 on offer.
