Dave Nevison's Wednesday tips: another winner for Schofield?

Nick Schofield has made a tremendously impressive start to his career as a trainer and at the time of wiring on Tuesday morning, his last three runners have all won.

Mammies Boy is making his debut for the yard and it is his first run since last spring, but given the stable form, I am happy to take a chance on his fitness. He won on his final start for the O’Neills and had been on the improve for them, plus showed good battling qualities after having to be switched to challenge in what was just a four-runner race.

The application of a tongue strap by Schofield for this first run back is a positive for me and the booking of Sean Bowen raises expectations even higher.

Flash Gorcombe was raised to a mark of 112 after his last win back in January of last year and has found those higher marks beyond him.

However, he has largely run okay since that win and has always competed in higher grade handicaps than this basement grade event.

He is now off a mark of 98 after a modest run in a 0-120 grade handicap last time out and hopefully the drop to 0-100 grade (the lowest he has raced in) will be easier for the experienced nine-year-old. Conditions are in his favour and he looks the safest option here.

John Butler’s eight-year-old handicapper is difficult to catch right these days, but ran his best race of 2025 when beaten a neck over this course and distance back in December.

He was upped in trip for his latest start and ran respectably, but may well be suited by this drop back down to a mile here. He has never won a handicap, but has been tried in Listed company in the past and is 22lb lower than when he started out. A market check is advised for the in-form Butler yard.
