Dave Nevison's Tuesday tips: bets at Taunton and Carlisle

3.35 Carlisle: Smart Decision
This is a decent handicap hurdle for a midweek meeting, and looks a good opportunity for the ultra-consistent gelding, Smart Decision, to record another win.
He has already won three times under William Easterby, who is on board here, and although this five-year-old was beaten last time out, he probably produced a career-best performance when second at Haydock behind the useful Brentford Hope.
Tim Easterby’s charge has been raised just 2lb for that effort, and still looks to be improving, while his first victory over hurdles was over this course and distance, so he has plenty in his favour.
4.04 Carlisle: Shadow Chaser
Shadow Chaser became disappointing over hurdles for two previous trainers after a promising first run in a bumper.
However, now that he has been switched to fences, it does look as though he might be able to win races for another new trainer based on his debut over the larger obstacles last time out.
It looks significant that Mark Walford has applied cheekpieces for Shadow Chaser's first run for the yard, and the blinkers that were tried last time certainly brought about improvement.
He had previously won an Irish Point to Point so a stiff three miles looks the right way to go with Shadow Chaser who looks set to break his maiden soon.
4.45 Taunton: Ilot De L’Isle
This does not look the strongest contest, and Ilot De L’Isle might well be the most interesting contender.
Richard Bandey’s gelding won two races in France in 2022, including on heavy ground. He has been lightly-raced since joining his new yard, and it was only last time out that he showed any signs of promise.
He has tumbled in the weights, and the signs were much better when he finished fifth at Leicester in January. Various headgear has been tried, and Bandey has opted for the kitchen sink (!) this time, and has combined cheekpieces with a tongue tie.
The selection is also upped in trip again and, kept to a right-handed track, he will hopefully progress again and return to his French form.
