Betting expert Dave Nevison likes a pair running on day one the Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket and also has a selection at Pontefract. Watch how his fancies fare live on Racing TV.
4.30 Newmarket: Baltic
Even though he is unbeaten in four handicaps this season, Baltic could well still be the least exposed of this field.
His past two wins have come on the all-weather but he won’t be inconvenienced by reverting to the turf here.
Harry Charlton’s four-year-old has been favourite for all four of his wins this season and, although not winning by far, he has knuckled down well on each occasion.
He seems to go well for any rider and scored under James Doyle on his penultimate start.
5.05 Newmarket: Classic Encounter
This George Boughey-trained three-year-old has made a late start to his second season but showed enough on his reappearance to suggest he can make up for lost time this autumn.
He stayed on nicely from the back of the pack to be beaten just three lengths into fifth and will be very well suited by the likely fast pace here.
An opening handicap mark of 80 could well be lenient for this well-bred son of Shamardal. He will be suited by further in time but should be able to exploit his mark over the mile for now.
5.23 Pontefract: Wen Moon
He needs to bounce back from a disappointing run at Chester, where he was always struggling after missing the break. However, he is 4lb lower than when he was placed here twice in July and generally runs well at this track.
He scored in October last year and it may be that autumn is the time to catch Wen Moon. He hasn’t run in a handicap of this lowly grade all season, so has plenty going for him despite top weight.
