2.25 York: Sun Goddess

I cannot remember when a recent Group 1-winning two-year-old has turned up in one of these Sales races even despite the massive prize money on offer. However, such is the depth of the Aidan O’Brien talent pool that it is no surprise that a horse like Sun Goddess takes up this engagement.

This has to be the best ever of this type of race, but as usual, a huge field is full of makeweights and only three of the field merit serious consideration.

Sun Goddess came from the back of the field to win the Phoenix in very good style last time out augmenting a previous Group 2 win and is a real contender for the championship races to come.

A fast run six furlongs is inevitable and looks ideal for Sun Goddess, and I expect her to win comfortably under Ryan Moore.

3.00 York: The Angel King

This is a terrific heritage handicap and The Angel King has plenty going for him and looks worth a decent bet a 25-1 for my money.

Ian Williams has run his gelding without cheekpieces since he got him from France despite him winning twice in headgear last season. They are back on today and it looks significant.

The Angel King first showed that he might well pay his way at Chester on his second start and then didn’t get the rub of the green at Epsom. Last time, however, he ran an excellent race to be second once again at Chester, running up against a big improver.

The four-year-old is still lightly raced and will be very well suited to coming off a strong pace, which is guaranteed here.

He has done well with the draw in stall 3 and will not mind at all if there is any further rain. His current odds look very generous.

Perfect Part hasn’t been placed in three runs at York so far, but has had valid excuses on two of those runs and was coming back form a break on the other one. There is a chance the Brian Ellison-trained filly could outrun her big odds here.

A modest run last time out has to be forgiven, but a 2lb drop in the weights (before her useful claimer’s 5lb allowance) makes that a bit easier. Her two runs at Thirsk in May are the ones that give me hope of a good run here.

She was second giving weight to Annastarzy, who won her next two, and previous to that, ran well at Doncaster in the Spring Mile on easy ground. A very strongly run seven furlongs is equally good for Perfect Part and she might well sneak into a place here.
