The Mares’ meeting at Cheltenham and the final day of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket give us another really enjoyable midweek afternoon and hopefully the trio below run OK in some tough handicaps.
Is a bang in-form mare who jumps fences well and gained reward for some consistent efforts with an easy win at Warwick last month.
That was in a small field, but she has run well in a bigger-field novice on this ground and over this course and distance earlier in the season, so should be perfectly well suited by Thursday’s test.
Henry Daly remains in good form after a fine season and it is difficult to see this consistent mare not running a race, especially as there doesn’t appear to be too much competition for the lead. That will likely suit Precious Eleanour here.
Is still lightly raced so may well have improvement in him as a four-year-old.
He is certainly suited by the Rowley Mile, with both his wins coming here, including his latest over this trip. This track often suits a front-runner and it seems likely Carolus Magnus will get the lead here.
He wears a hood for the first time, which I am taking as a positive as it might enable him to conserve some energy. He was ridden by Oisin Murphy for both wins last season but David Probert had a stellar season in 2021, so I am perfectly happy he takes the mount.
Could be another for Probert and looks the type who could progress beyond handicaps this season.
He begins this season as a gelding, which may both focus him on his racing and strengthen him physically.
He won over the July course last summer and seemed very much an improver but things didn’t go right for him in two subsequent runs, particularly at Goodwood where he met trouble in running.
Henry Candy brings his charges along patiently and this is another lightly raced type who could excel. The market may be a guide as to what is expected.
