Royal Ascot late races on Wednesday: Dave Nevison's best bets

James Doyle has won this race twice in recent years and was runner-up in 2021, so he looks a very strong jockey booking for Beshtani who almost made a winning British debut when the combination lost by a nose at the Derby meeting. 

The selection is able to run off the same mark here, so if he has come on for that seasonal reappearance, then he could be very well in, especially as his Epsom form is already working out well. 

A draw in stall nine looks very favourable and even though he is not proven on fast ground, I doubt whether it is going to get lightening quick, and I also doubt that underfoot conditions are going to be any issue. 

Trainer Hamad Al-Jehani is hardly a household name over here, but he has proved he knows what he is doing in Qatar, so I am sure Beshtani will have been well prepared for this big event.

The least the can be expected of Doha is that she wins a Royal Ascot handicap (she is by Sea The Stars and out of dual Arc winner Treve) but in a lightly-raced career so far, she has only managed to win a Windsor maiden, albeit by nine lengths from a horse now rated 90. 

Ralph Beckett’s filly is running off a rating of 85 here, so is arguably seriously well handicapped for this big-field affair and will definitely have been trained with this race in mind. 

She was beaten at odds-on when she reappeared at Haydock, but didn’t settle on soft ground in a slowly run contest, and I am happy to forgive that run. I also expect her to have made giant strides ahead of this event.

Beckett has had horses placed in two of the three renewals of this new race and is excellent with fillies in particular, so I fancy it may be third time lucky on Wednesday afternoon.

Treasure Isle is my first two-year-old bet of the season and he will undoubtedly go off favourite for this cavalry charge, but he has plenty going for him here. 

Aidan O’Brien’s colt was beaten at odds-on in a heavy ground race at the Curragh when making his debut, but progressed significantly from that reappearance when making all at Naas last time out. 

He broke well on that occasion and the win achieved the highest Timeform rating by some way compared to the rest of this field. His trainer and jockey combination have won three of the past ten runnings of the Windsor Castle and Treasure Isle has gone for this Listed race, rather than the Group Two Norfolk on Thursday. He also has a Group One entry, so is clearly very well thought of. 

I would be tempted to take the morning price as he could go off very short.
