Dave Nevison: my three horse racing tips for Wednesday

Our resident website tipster Dave Nevison likes two runners at Perth and another on the Flat at Catterick. Enjoy all the action from Ludlow as well as day two of the Punchestown Festival live on Racing TV.

Karl Burke’s four-year-old is a long-standing maiden and definitely one of the stable’s lesser lights, but she can beat a field of plodders and runners returning from spells over hurdles and fences here.

A glance at her latest respectable efforts reveals that she has come up against a couple of well-handicapped improvers, so her performances might be upgraded and she might be well treated having been left on the same mark.

Forgetmenotblue handles soft ground well enough and, given that she stays two miles, she will be favoured by the likely strong pace here. Hopefully can break her maiden.

4.05 Perth: Maimie’s Magic

Finished: 2ndSP: 12/1

Maimie’s Magic represents a stable that is no stranger to success at Perth and Stuart Crawford might still have a well-handicapped mare on his hands here.

The six-year-old has successfully raided these shores twice in low-grade handicaps with wins at Newcastle and Kelso, but her two subsequent duck eggs next to her name do not tell the whole story by any means. She has met significant trouble in running both times and both runs can pretty much be written off.

She looks set to appreciate the step-up in trip to 2 ½ miles here, while amateur jockey Stephen Connor has ridden her before and the 7lb claimer rides pretty much exclusively for Crawford, often on horses at very big prices. He has plenty of experience and rides one I fancy for Iain Jardine in the last.

4.35 Perth: Something Golden

Finished: 6thSP: 9/2

It will certainly be a red letter day for Stephen Connor if he could ride a double at Perth but it is definitely not impossible - and I will certainly be celebrating if he does.

Something Golden’s half-brother Cottonvale was moderate but stayed 3 ¼ miles, so it is perhaps no surprise that his form has stepped up a little as he has stepped up in trip. He has been noted staying on in each of his last three starts, taking third place on each occasion. Last time he could have finished a length closer but for an untidy jump at the last but he was certainly appreciating the three-miles trip which he tackles again here.

Something Golden has been dropped 2lb for that run and his rider claims a further 5lb in this amateurs-only race despite being among the most experienced riders in this field.
