Countdown to The McCoys is underway with nominations released

By Racing TV
Last Updated: Tue 5 Dec 2023
Nominations for The McCoys, the awards which recognise excellence in Jump racing, have been revealed with the ceremony taking place in front of an invited audience at Cheltenham Racecourse on the evening of Wednesday October 12. Racing TV’s Nick Luck and Jill Douglas of ITV Sport will act as comperes.
Established in 2017, The McCoys are named in honour of the most successful Jump jockey of all-time, Sir AP McCoy, who rode a record 4,358 Jump winners during his career and was champion Jump jockey in Britain an unprecedented 20 times. He retired from the saddle on the final day of the 2014-15 season at Sandown Park.
In determining winners at The McCoys, performances over the course of the 2021-22 Jump season at all Jockey Club Racecourses that stage Jump racing are taken into consideration.
A reminder of the winners at last year's event
Winners at The McCoys are determined by a panel of judges which in 2022 were made up of Sir AP McCoy himself, equestrian Olympian Zara Tindall, ITV Racing’s Ed Chamberlin, Racing Post journalist Chris Cook and Jon Pullin, Cheltenham’s Clerk of the Course.
Nominations for each category, including the new Training Achievement of The Season category, can be found below. There are no nominations for the two special awards – the Outstanding Contribution and Judges’ Choice awards – with the winners revealed on the night.
The McCoys are also awarded to the Leading Owner, Leading Trainer, Leading Jockeys (Professional, Conditional and Amateur), plus the Leading Horses (Novice Hurdler, Hurdler, Novice Chaser and Chaser). With winners decided on the number of wins - with countback on places in the event of a tie – already decided by last year’s races the roll of honour can be found further below with the list of nominations.
Ian Renton, The Jockey Club’s Regional Managing Director for the West, said: “It’s fantastic that The McCoys has established itself so quickly as an event that the Jump racing community looks forward to with great enthusiasm.
“The night itself is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of those who contributed to making last season such a thrilling one, while also highlighting the brilliant racing to come over the next few months.”
A full list of winners for the first four years of The McCoys can be found online at: www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/events-tickets/the-mccoy-awards/
When The McCoys were first staged in 2017, only achievements at The Jockey Club’s racecourses in the South West Region – Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton - were taken into consideration when determining winners.

Wendigo 10/1 for Brown Advisory after Ayr romp | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Jamie Snowden’s Wendigo came through his Cheltenham Festival preparations at Ayr with flying colours, with his trainer describing the race as “perfect”. Last seen finishing strongly into third in the Grade One Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas, he was taking a big drop in class for the Join Coral ‘Bet £10 Get £50’ ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase. Only two were declared to take him on, Donald McCain’s Maximilian, a Grade Two winner over hurdles in January 2023, and Nick Alexander’s Donny Boy. Maximilian set out in front under Brian Hughes and while Donny Boy briefly led, Gavin Sheehan did not waste time in sending Wendigo on. Jumping with aplomb, the seven-year-old was soon a long way clear and the 1-5 favourite came home 22 lengths to the good. Wendigo is a general 10-1 chance for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham. “You always hope it is straightforward when they are so short in the betting and thankfully it was,” said Snowden. “It’s a good sign when after the last he picked up immediately, suggesting there was plenty left, it was a perfect race really. “It’s a long gap between Kempton and Cheltenham so it was nice to get a run into him. “We went right-handed at Christmas, but we always had a sneaky suspicion he was better left-handed and he did jump out to his left at Kempton. All the graded races between now and then like the Scilly Isles, the Reynoldstown and Pendil are right-handed so we had to go up to Ayr. “He jumped beautifully today and I think he’s the best of the British in the Brown Advisory, but he’s not had four runs over fences which qualifies him for the handicaps. Our main aim is the Brown Advisory, but we do have options. “We can watch the Irish this weekend now.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits! A new star in the Ricci silks? Charme De Faust impresses at Thurles | Full Race | 2026 | Racing TV

Willie Mullins’ Charme De Faust made a successful Irish debut in the Thurles Maiden Hurdle. Sent off the 5-6 favourite, the Rich Ricci-owned filly briefly looked as if she might have a race on her hands turning in but came home a powerful nine lengths clear. She was cut to 14-1 from 25s for the Triumph Hurdle by Paddy Power. Winning rider Paul Townend said: “She handled the ground well, will improve from it as she had a couple of blows and she jumped brilliantly. I was able to use her French experience and I think there is plenty of improvement in her. “I liked how she did it and she has developing to do yet, to fill into her frame. I think she’ll have a nice future and when she strengthens up, she’ll be a fine mare.” Must-see compilations and best bits ➡️ http://y2u.be/Kfl2CXtG6xA Greatest Hits!
