Some will be worried about this progressive stayer dropping back in trip, but he doesn’t lack gears and his stamina is likely to come into play as there are a stack of runners in this who like to force the pace or be up with the gallop. It could well be teed up for a closer, and the Richard Hobson-trained seven-year-old, available at 12-1, fits the bill.

Although Gentlemansgame ran to a high level in the Savills Chase last time out, this is surely a brilliant opportunity for L'HOMME PRESSE to get back to winning ways on these terms. Returning to a left-handed track is a positive and he ran as well as could have been expected in the King George last time considering the ground went against him.

The selection looks the stronger stayer of the two and should have plenty in his favour, with conditions set to ease ahead of Saturday.  

It is hard to make a strong case for the other quartet who all arrive here with question marks to answer, and while the Venetia Williams team could be in better form, that isn't enough to put me off L'Homme Presse.

I don’t think the likes of Teahupoo are going to be shaking in their boots looking at the runners in this traditional Stayers' Hurdle trial, but the race surely represents a great opportunity for Gowel Road to end a desperate run of seconds, all of which have come at Cheltenham. 

He ran really well last time to be beaten just half a length in the Relkeel Hurdle behind Lucky Place, and he looks set to get an easy lead here, so hopefully will have enough to withstand any late challenges.

If this race was at Ascot, I would possibly favour Crambo, but he certainly didn’t perform at the Cheltenham Festival last year, so Gowel Road looks the safest option.
