Brough Scott: Being in carriage one of royal procession one of the best days of my life

Brough Scott has seen it all in his long and storied career as a racing journalist and presenter, doing full credit to every famous occasion and each great horse he covered.
But he will never forget riding in carriage one alongside the King and Queen during the royal procession on the final day of Royal Ascot 2026, describing it as “the greatest honour of my life”.
Whether as a writer for various notable publications or as a television broadcaster, Scott’s summaries and insights have captured the drama, the romance and the magic of the sport of kings.
So it was just reward he was invited to join the King and Queen, soaking up the adulation on the journey up the Ascot straight before entering the parade ring to rapturous applause.
Scott told ITV Racing: “I’m a very lucky fellow, I’ve been around years and done lots of things in racing and had a wonderful time, but this was about the best of them.
“I first came here in 1962 or 1963, and I’ve seen it change but I honestly think it’s in better shape now than it ever was – I’m not, but it is.
“I’m very proud of what has happened today and I’m very proud to have been selected.”
Scott, 83, was accompanied by his wife Susan and only found out he would ride alongside the monarch in the moments leading up to the royal procession.
Asked to explain the process, he said: “I found out when I stepped into Windsor Castle and they gave me the sheet! I was convinced we would be in the carriage at the back, so I had to tell Susan that we were in number one.
“It was a wonderful experience and a very enjoyable experience and, saying this carefully, the greatest honour of my life. I’m a lucky fellow and for my wife to be with me was the loveliest moment.”
When asked if it was his best day on a racecourse, Scott went on: “It’s one of the best days of my life.”
