Brendan Powell breaks arm in Plumpton fall

Brendan Powell is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken arm in a heavy fall at Plumpton on Monday.
The leading jockey was partnering the Joe Tizzard-trained Diamond Days in the Southern Contract Novices’ Handicap Chase when his mount made a bad mistake at the first fence and while Powell did his best to stay on board, he eventually fell to the ground and both horse and rider collided with the running rail.
Powell was eventually taken to hospital by ambulance, causing a delay to the following race, and an X-ray on Monday evening confirmed his injuries.
Brendan Powell senior, the jockey’s father, said on Tuesday morning: “I know the NHS is very busy and everything, but he’s actually still lying on a bed in a hallway in the hospital in Brighton.
“They X-rayed him at about 7.30pm last night and stuck a plaster on his arm, which is broken in two places. But nobody has been to say whether it’s going to operated on or not yet, he’s just been lying there for 12 or 13 hours.”
Powell had been looking forward to some high-profile mounts later this week, with Tizzard’s two stable stars JPR One and Alexei both bound for Aintree.
“It couldn’t have happened at a worse time, but it’s the same for everyone,” his father added.
“He’s a bit battered and bruised and has a few cuts on his face, but it could have been a lot worse.
“We’ll just have to see what they (doctors) do now. They’ll probably plate it or pin it. Things like normally take six to eight weeks (to heal), but we’ll see. Hopefully he can get back by Christmas or something like that.”
