Kevin Ryan might be better known for training Flat horses but in Beyond The Clouds, he has a very smart hurdling prospect on his hands after he maintained his unbeaten start to the season at
Musselburgh.
Winner of two of his three bumpers before scoring on his hurdling bow at Kelso, the four-year-old cruised around under Brian Hughes, never giving those who took the prohibitive odds of 2-5 a moment of anxiety.
A step up in class now awaits after his win in the Alastair Montgomery Trust Novices' Hurdle, but given he has yet to race on ground any softer than good, he may find his options limited in the winter.
"I'm delighted. He made one mistake early on but that was just novicey," said Ryan.
"He travelled great and is progressing with each run.
"He's beaten a decent yardstick (Golden Jeffrey, rated 132) there and won as he liked. He never looked in any trouble at any stage.
"He's very exciting and he could be a decent horse on the Flat at some stage.
"As for ground, I'm not saying he won't run on good to soft, but he floats over good ground and that was why he ran today and not at Wetherby on Saturday where it went soft. We will have to try him on ground with an ease at some stage.
"We'll have to step up in class now but where that will be I don't know, I haven't spoken to Brian as yet."
Paddy Power introduced the winner into their Supreme Novices' Hurdle betting at 66-1.
Jim Dreaper made sure the trip over from Ireland was not wasted as Mullaghmurphy Blue (evens favourite) was a comfortable winner of the Bet At racinguk.com Novices' Handicap Chase.
Rachel McDonald is enjoying a profitable spell and enjoyed a double on the day, firstly teaming up with John Williams (15-8 favourite) to win the 100% Of Racing UK Profits Returned To Racing Handicap Chase and later Blue Kascade (11-8 favourite) in the Finest Collection Of Racing On Racing UK Handicap Chase.
The Grand National-winning duo of Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox teamed up with Superior Commander (8-1) in the Never Miss A Race On Racing UK Handicap Hurdle.
