1 AMORA QUEEN
Trainer: Charlie Johnston. Official Rating: 91. Odds: 50-1.
Amora Queen changed hands for just €12,000 as a yearling but she’s unbeaten in two starts and now takes her chance in the highest grade. She was an emphatic debut winner at Doncaster in June but only scrambled home at Chelmsford last time, beating a rival who was soundly beaten in a handicap at Newmarket last time off a mark of 81. That suggests this is an ambitious project.
2 COMPOSING
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. Official Rating: 107. Odds: 12-1.
Composing has beaten beaten at short odds on her past two starts (Healy Racing) Went off at Evens for the Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh after winning her first three starts but faded to finish fourth behind Precise, her stablemate, despite having the run of the things from the front. She then went off at even shorter odds for the Goffs Million last time, when seemingly heavily favoured by the weights, but again fluffed her lines. Those who have burnt their fingers will not be inclined to give her another chance, for all she’s now trading at double-figure odds.
3 DANCE TO THE MUSIC
Trainer: Charlie Appleby. Official Rating: 101. Odds: 6-1.
The daughter of Dubawi is a sister to the stable’s wonderful Space Blues but she’s on the small side (although so was her sire) and her trainer has said he does not view here as a Guineas filly. She has looked a work in progress, winning a bunch finish in the Sweet Solera before failing to pick up some low-lying fruit in Canada last time. I’d imagine connections will be delighted if she can pick up some Group One black type.
4 EVOLUTIONIST
Trainer: Karl Burke. Official Rating: 98. Odds: 40-1.
She had
Legacy Link more than five lengths back in third when scoring on the July Course at Newmarket in August but seemed beaten fair and square when four lengths third to Composing in the Debutante Stakes last time, and the winner, who she meets again, has rather let that form down. Keep in mind, too, that Evolutionist’s dam was something of a tricky character and that she flashed her tail when beaten on her debut at Haydock, for all she has done nothing wrong in terms of temperament on her past two starts.
5 LEGACY LINK
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden. Official Rating: --. Odds: 9-2.
She’s a daughter of Dubai whose uncle is none other than Frankel, so gets a big tick in the box marked “breeding”. However, a decent pedigree can count for little once the stalls open and
Legacy Link could only finish a well-beaten third behind Evolutionist and Lyrics Of Life on her Newmarket debut. She seemed more clued up at Haydock last time, when winning at the main expense of Lyrics Of Life (6 ½ length swing in form), although she was allowed to dictate steady fractions on the latter occasion and the time was nothing special. Legacy Link could carry on making chunks of improvement given her pedigree, but she looks defensively priced up.
6 MOMENTS OF JOY
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien. Official Rating: 97. Odds: 20-1.
Had an odds-on stablemate back in third when winning on her debut at Leopardstown in June and has since run well in better company, finishing third to Humidity in the Chesham before chasing home Queen Of Hawaii in a Group Three contest at The Curragh last time. She is the type to keep improving but faces no easy task turning the tables on her latest conqueror.
7 MOON TARGET
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott. Official Rating: 103. Odds: 10-1.
Won her first two races, at Newmarket and Yarmouth, by an aggregate of 13 lengths before being beaten under a length by
Precise in the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood. The winner, who she meets again, has since gone on to win in Group One company but
Moon Target has not gone to the next level, bating one home in the May Hill before finishing a keeping-on third in the Rockfel Stakes. The return to a mile is in her favour but she now looks vulnerable.
8 PRECISE
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. Official Rating: 111. Odds: 13-8.
She’s thriving on her racing and deserves her place at the head of the market. The form of her decisive Moyglare win last time has taken a couple of knocks, but it would be churlish to fault the way she picked off her rivals after a slowish start.
Precise had previously been too strong for Moon Target and Aylin (the subsequent May Hill winner) at Goodwood, having earlier won in a good time at Cork, with her running style and pedigree pointing to her relishing the step up to a mile. In addition, she seems impervious to underfoot conditions and her trainer has already scooped four Group One races for two-year-olds in the past three weeks.
9 QUEEN OF HAWAII
Trainer: Joseph O'Brien. Official Rating: 102. Odds: 9-1.
Finished a well-beaten sixth behind Composing on her debut but has since left that form well behind, clocking a good time on her next outing when winning at Leopardstown before readily beating Moments Of Joy by a couple of lengths in a Group Three at The Curragh last time. The collateral form reads well as the runner-up had been beaten a similar distance behind Humidity in the Chesham, and that horse subsequently got to within a length of Bow Echo in the Royal Lodge last time, having previously gone close in the Solario. Her trainer said after her Curragh win that it would be the Goffs Million or this race for her next. He’s resisted chasing the big cash on the table to head here, which must be viewed as an endorsement of her talents.
10 SUGAR ISLAND
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. Official Rating: 100. Odds: 28-1.
Like so many at Ballydoyle, she’s bred in the purple, being by Dubawi out of a Galileo mare who is a sister to Minding, and it is unlikely we will see the best of her until she tackles middle distances next season. That said, she is no slouch and upped her game when a close third to Aylin in the May Hill last time. That puts her in the mix – Aylin was not far behind Precise at Goodwood – for all that she could do with an extra couple of furlongs or perhaps softer ground to bring her stamina reserves into play. I’d expect Sean Levey to be told to make plenty of use of her.
11 VENETIAN LACE
Trainer: Charlie Johnston. Official Rating: 96. Odds: 66-1.
Won on her debut at Chelmsford at the start of June and has since held her own in Listed/Group races before a slightly backward step when only sixth in the May Hill. The official ratings suggest she’s got about a stone to find to trouble such as Precise, and it’s hard to disagree with that.
VERDICT
It is difficult to escape the claims of
Precise, with
Queen Of Hawaii and
Sugar Island the each-way alternatives.
1 PRECISE. 2 QUEEN OF HAWAII. 3 SUGAR ISLAND.
