3.05 Down Royal: King Gris
Jack Kennedy is flat out in his pursuit of the Irish jump jockeys' championship, and this progressive sort can help him increase his lead over Paul Townend.
King Gris has won his past two starts at Ayr and Hexham, and his superiority at the latter was masked by a bad error at the last. He still ran out an easy winner, and a 10lb rise in the weights should not be enough to stop him here, with blinkers also added for the first time to sharpen him up.
Kennedy rides for the first time, and we should take the hint.
4.15 Musselburgh: Blues And Royals
This three-year-old was an impressive winner at Kempton last time out where he had to overcome a pace, and positional, disadvantage.
He quickened smartly to win, and still looks very well treated off a rating of 73. Given that was his first start in a handicap, and he was a good deal better than the bare result, a 3lb rise seems to underestimate his potential, and my confidence is increased by his draw in stall one.
Quite simply, he could be thrown in off his rating.
4.55 Leopardstown: Pierre Bonnard
Pierre Bonnard looked to be an exciting prospect with a live chance in this year's Betfred Derby after his win in the Night Of Thunder Zetland Stakes at Newmarket in October.
He backed up that success with a win in the Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud, and the speed figures he has produced show he is a bona fide Group One performer.
I think he will cement his place at the top of the Betfred Derby market that is dominated by his trainer, Aidan O'Brien.
Ryan Moore rides, and he has a 34 per cent strike-rate at the track. His combination here with a top-class three-year-old prospect should ensure a victory.
5.15 Musselburgh: Noche Clasica
Ed Bethell has his team in great form for the start of the flat season, and he can land this competitive handicap with Noche Clasica as her strong-travelling style from stall one should be suited to this sharp track.
On her final start last season, she won a decent class three handicap at Redcar in a fast time, which makes a rating of 89 look very workable.
She was thoroughly progressive last season, winning three of her six starts, and is open to plenty of improvement.
